July 15, 2019

Sam Mulroy Naomh Mairtin

NH MAIRTIN 2-12

ST JOSEPHS 1-9

The Martins proved too strong for the Joes in the Senior Championship at Dunleer on Sunday night where they came out on top by six points.

It was the Joes who settled better to go three points up after nine minutes all from the boot of Alan Quigley before Sam Mulroy opened the Martins account with free.

The Joes added a fourth point when Conall Smyth was on target but the Martins then took control and points from Mulroy and Brian McQuillan had the teams level at four points apiece on 20 minutes.

After JP Rooney and Craig Doherty traded points, the game was effectively decided in a three minute spell between the 26 th . and 29 th . minute when the Martins hit 1-2 without reply. An excellent long-range point by midfielder Val Leddy put the Martins ahead by 0-6 to 0-5. Then the Martins split open the Joes defence and Sam Mulroy’s quick offload found John Clutterbuck who crashed the ball to the Joes net. Mulroy finished the scoring from a 13m free and the Martins went in at the break, ahead by double scores 1-7 to 0-5.

The Martins started the second where they had left off in the first with JP Rooney shooting over on 32 minutes and whatever hope of a Joes revival was virtually ended when Mulroy was taken down and he made no mistake when sending the resultant penalty to the Joes net. A follow up from a free wide on the right had the Martins almost out of sight on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-5 after 40 minutes.

The Joes battled bravely with Alan Quigley pointing a 45 and Brian McQuillan responded for the Martins following another fine pass from John Clutterbuck. Jack Mulligan then hit two excellent points to lift the spirits of the Joes supporters. Mulroy pointed a free for the Martins on 57 minutes before the Joes finished with a flourish.

Firstly, Conor Neary pointed from distance and Jack Mulligan broke through the Martins defence to send the ball to the corner of the net. It was Wayne Campbell who finished the scoring to give the Martins a deserved win on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-9.
