June 24, 2019

St Fechins and O’Connells remain level on 16 points at the top of Division 2 after both teams recorded victories on Saturday evening.

St Fechins had the more comfortable outing as they ran out convincing winners over St Mochtas in Louth Village on a final score of 3-19 to 0-10.

The opening half was a closely contested affair as the Fechins went in leading by just 0-9 to 0-6. However, the second period saw the visitors in dominant form and they scored three goals to secure the win. Declan Byrne was top scorer for the Mochtas with four points, whileAndrew English, Danny Kindlon and Gerry Garland were also on target.

O’Connells faced a much more difficult assignment against Kilkerley Emmets and it took an injury-time goal from Jackie Agnew to secure a 2-16 to 1-16 win.

The Bellingham side established first quarter lead with the help of scores from Andrew Sharkey, Robert Quigley, Niall Conlon and Sean Cairns but Kilkerley responded through Shane Lennon and Tadhg McEneaney before a Conor Murtagh goal saw the teams go in at the break level at 1-6 to 0-9.

Agnew scored his first goal early in the second half to put the O’Connells back in front but Kilkerley looked to be on course for victory when Rian Hand and Lennon pointed to put their side in front. However, Agnew pounced for his second goal before a late free from Quigley secured the win.

Oliver Plunketts collected their first victory of the season at Páirc Olibihear Pluincead with a deserved 2-13 to 2-8 win against the Joes.

The first goal of the game came on 12 minutes through Alan Quigley but Plunketts hit back when Frank Taaffe found the net. Soon after Conor Early added a second goal to take a 2-4 to 1-3 lead into the break. However, Jack Mulligan raised a green flag before the break to send the teams in level at 2-5 apiece.

The Plunketts took control of the game at the start of the second half with the midfield duo of Robbie Brodigan and Dean Carolan totally dominant and Barry Reynolds creating the overlap on the right wing. Three points in the first five minutes with Barry Reynolds setting up Conor Early for the first that was followed by points from Kevin Keogh and a Trevor Walsh free to send them on their way to victory.

Young Irelands consolidated their position in the top four thanks to a 1-14 to 0-12 win over Nh Fionnbarra in Dundalk.

Jordan O’Donoghue scored the only goal of the game on 12 minutes with the Barrs kept in touch with the help of scores from William Woods to trail by just 1-5 to 0-5 at the break.

This pattern continued through the second half as the Dundalk men held onto their lead and eventually won by five with scores from Derek Maguire, Peter McStravick and Cian O Naraigh.

Dundalk Gaels are level in third place with their town rivals after defeating Hunterstown Rovers by 4-11 to 3-10 at Hunterstown.

Barry Watters was in fine form for the winners as he scored a hat-trick to help his team come out on top by four points.

Watters struck twice in the first half while Ger McSorley also found the net from a penalty as the visitors went in leading by 3-5 to 3-4. The Gaels maintained the lead in the second half and Watters’ third goal sealed the victory.

Glyde Rangers recorded what could prove to be a very significant victory when they defeated St Kevins by 0-12 to 1-8 at Tallanstown.

As a result the hosts move above the Philipstown men to third from bottom in the table with just two games remaining.

At half time Glyde were 0-6 to 0-5 ahead and they held out in a tense finish with Trevor O’Brien, Niall Sharkey, Brian Duffy and Martin McArdle contributing vital scores.
