ACFL Div Two round-up: O'Connells and Fechins lead the way

O’Connells made it seven wins from eight when they had a 0-20 to 2-6 win over St. Kevins in Philipstown on Tuesday night as they remain joint top of the table.

The home side got off to the perfect start when Cian Callan waltzed past a few defenders and hit a great shot to the net in the first minute but the O’Connells went on to dominate the remainder of the half and scores from Robert Quigley, Jackie Agnew, Dean Stanfield and Conor McGill had their side leading by 0-14 to 1-2 at half time.

Cian Callan added a second goal just after the restart wile points from Aidan Craven and Seanie Crosbie cut the gap to five points. However, the O’Connells were not to be denied and they completed the win with late scores from Sean Cairns and Andrew Sharkey.

Dundalk Gaels moved into third place in the table thanks to a 0-15 to 2-6 win over Young Irelands at The Ramparts as Eanna McArdle top-scored with seven points.

Also on target in the first half were Gerard McSorley, Niall Hearty and Gary Shevlin as the Gaels led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half time. Peter McStravick, James Prendergast and Derek Maguire were on target for the Young Irelands.

Goals from Sean McLoughlin and James Prendergast got the Young Irelands back into the game in the second half but the Gaels remained in charge and points from McArdle and McSorley saw the get over the line.

The Joes got themselves back into contention for a play-off place thanks to a 0-12 to 0-8 win over Glyde Rangers.

The first half was dominated by frees with Alan Quigley, Thomas Smith and Ben Mulligan pointing for the Joes, while Glyde responded through Trevor O’Brien and Brian Duffy. At the end of the first half, the Joes were leading by 0-8 to 0-3.

Quigley and O’Brien continued to trade scores in the second half and although Glyde cut the gap to three points in the closing stages, the Joes sealed victory with a point from Thomas Smyth.

St Fechins remain on top of the table on score difference after recording a 2-23 to 3-9 win over Oliver Plunketts. At the break the Termonfeckin men were leading by 2-12 to 1-4.

Kilkerley Emmets moved above Hunterstown Rovers in the table when they scored a 1-13 to 0-12 win over the Mid Louth side. Rovers had their top scorers in Glen Mathews (4) and Ryan Burns (3) but it wasn’t enough to prevent a fourth defeat of the season.
