May 13, 2019

St Marys moved to the top of the Division 1 table after scoring a 1-15 to 0-11 win over Clan na Gael in Dundalk on Thursday night.

With the help of scores from Darren Clarke, Ronan Carroll, and Cian Commins, the Marys were four points to the good early on. However, the Clans recovered well and thanks to Paul Crewe, Mark Newell, Paul Gore and Micheal McDonnell they went into the break with a 0-9 to 0-6 lead.

Two points from Robbie Curran early in the second half had the Clans four points clear but they were unable to score for the remainder of the game as the Marys took control. Points from Mark Fay, Jamie Rooney, Eimhin Keenan and Conor Gillespie along with a goal from Cian Commins on 47 minutes saw them come out on top with a deserved win.

Mattock Rangers caused a surprise in Clogherhead on Friday night when they defeated Dreadnots by 4-12 to 1-12.

The home side were hoping to consolidate their position in the top three but in what proved to be a very competitive game, they just couldn’t match the goal-scoring power of Mattock.

The goals came from Niall McKeown, Adrian Reid, David Reid and Brian Corcoran for a Mattock side who were leading by 1-5 to 1-4 at half time. Liam Shevlin scored the only goal for the Dreadnots.

The Geraldines lost their place at the top of the table after losing by 3-15 to 1-16 to Nh Mairtin at Monasterboice on Saturday night, a result that leaves the home side just two points off the pace.

JP Rooney was once again the hero for the Mairtins as he kicked 2-4 in an impressive display. Both goals came in the opening half along with a third from Brian McQuillan as their side went in at the break with a commanding 3-7 to 0-8 lead.

The Gers battled back in the second half and gave themselves hope when Glen Trainor scored their goal. However, points from Conor Whelan and Wayne Campbell saw the Mairtins secure the win.

Newtown Blues picked up their second win of the campaign when they scored a comfortable 2-15 to 0-11 win over St Patricks at Lordship on Saturday night.

The Drogheda men dominated from the outset and were 0-6 to 0-2 ahead when Daire Nally scored the first goal of the game on 19 minutes. Cathal Grogan, Jason Woods and Danny O’Connor pointed for the Pats but at the break they were trailing by 1-10 to 0-3.

Grogan, O’Connor and Paddy Keenan pointed for the Pats in the second half but a comeback was never on the cards when Nally scored his second goal on 42 minutes. Robert Carr finished with five points and Ross Nally contributed four as the Blues cruised to victory.

Terry Kelly scored a late point to give Sean O’Mahonys their third win of the season at home to O Raghallaighs on Saturday night.

The game proved to be very tight throughout and at the break only a point separated the teams with O Raghallaighs leading by 1-6 to 0-8.

Stephen Kilcoyne and Stephen Fisher pointed for the hosts and as the teams traded scores a draw looked to be the most likely outcome. However, it was Kelly who had the final say as he snatched victory for his team.
