FL round-up: back-fixtures see Mary's among the winners

April 25, 2019

Ronan Carroll St Marys

Tuesday night saw a number of back fixtures played in the main league competitions and in Division 1 St Marys claimed a 2-10 to 1-9 victory over Dreadnots in the top of the table clash at Ardee on Tuesday evening.

Both teams went into the game with three wins from three outings but after an entertaining encounter it was the Marys who joined the Geraldines at the top of Division 1A with second half goals from Ronan Carroll and Liam Jackson proving crucial.

It was the Dreadnots who had the better of the first half and a goal just before the break saw them lead by 1-6 to 0-7 at half time.

Just two minutes into the second half Ronan Carroll gave his side a real boost when he found the back of the net. It was nip and tuck for the rest of the game but the impressive Liam Jackson added the second goal nine minutes from time to help his side to victory.

Division 2

St Fechins made it four wins from four in Division 2 when they defeated O’Connells by 0-17 to 1-12 in Beaulieu on Tuesday night as they joined Young Irelands at the top of the table.

The O’Connells also went into the game with a 100 per cent record but despite a bright start, they were unable to add to their run of victories.

Points from Robert Quigley and Cian Doyle were followed by a Niall Conlon goal as the Bellingham side took a 1-3 to no score lead. However, the Fechins settled into the game and with the help of points from Ronan Holcroft, Ryan Walsh and Brian Devlin they went in at the break with a 0-10 to 1-6 lead.

The Fechins continued to dominate and went four points clear with the help of scores from Niall and Brian Devlin. Although the O’Connells cut the gap to one point entering the closing stages, it was the Fechins who held out thanks to late points from Holcroft.

Young Irelands remain top with eight points from four games after a 2-13 to 0-10 win over Glyde Rangers in Tallanstown.

First half goals from Dermot Mone and a Mark Savage penalty had the visitors very much in control at the break as they went in with a 2-7 to 0-7 advantage.

Glyde were unable to mount any real challenge in the second half and could only add three further points as the Dundalk men held out comfortably. Cian O Naraigh and Dermot Mone also kicked important points for the winners.

Trevor O’Brien top-scored for the hosts with three points, while Barry Sharkey, Martin McArdle and Alan Brennan also raised white flags.

Dundalk Gaels recorded their first win of the Division 2 campaign when they defeated St Kevins by 1-13 to 1-8 at Philipstown.

The Ramparts side collected their first point of the season on Saturday when they drew with St Josephs and the confidence from that result was evident as they took the game to the Kevins from the outset.

At half time the Gaels had built up a 0-10 to 0-3 lead and a goal from a Gerard McSorley penalty in the second half saw them run out worthy winners. Paul McCrave (4) and Gary Shevlin (3) also contributed vital points.

Kilkerley Emmets claimed their second successive win when they defeated Nh Fionnbarra by 3-16 to 1-10 at John Markey Park on Wednesday night.

Kilkerley started brighter and scored a goal straight from the throw in. They steadily built on this lead as many mistakes from the Finbarrs gave them easy scores while another goal towards the end of the first half cemented their superiority.  The Barrs scores in the first half came from Hugh Osborne 0-3, Padraic Murphy, William Woods and Adam Hanratty as Kilkerley went in leading by 2-11 to 0-6.

Once again Kilkerley made hay from the throw in with a goal from the first attack before the Barrs grabbed a goal back via sub Padraig Butterly.  Points from Padraic Murphy 0-2, Bernard Osborne and Hugh Osborne were not enough to make a dent in Kilkerley’s lead.

The remaining game in Division 2 saw St Mochtas continue their good form with a 1-18 to 0-6 win over an Oliver Plunketts side who remain bottom of the table and yet to pick up a point.

Division 3A

Lannleire came away from Tullyallen on Tuesday night with two precious league points following an exciting 2-8 to 0-12 win over the home side, Glen Emmets.

Two early Conor Grimes points had the Emmets in front but goals from Bob Murphy (8 mins) and Paul Callan (12 mins) gave Lannleire a lead they were never to lose. Points from James Butler and Keelan O Neill kept Glen Emmets in touch but Lannleire went in at the break leading 2-4 to 0-8.

Lannleire suffered a blow at the start of the second half with the loss through injury of Paul McGeough and Colin Murphy, but Bob Murphy kicked a fine score to extend their lead to three points, Glen Emmets replied though with scores from O' Neill and Butler to reduce Lannleire's lead to the minimum entering the final quarter.  However, Paul Callan kicked two points in quick succession to extend the gap back out to three.  Glen Emmets poured forward in the time remaining in search of scores and added two points but tremendous defence from Lannleire allied to the safe hands of Liam Callan in the Lannleire nets meant disappointment for the home team with Gary Monaghan coming up from the back to seal victory for the Dunleer men with the final score of the game.

Division 3B

Goals late in both halves were the difference for Annaghminnon on Tuesday evening as they defeated St Nicholas by 2-11 to 1-8.

The Nicks started well with some good possession in the first half and the accurate boot of Alex Reilly had them in a lead coming up to the break. However, a late penalty had the home team leading by 1-4 to 1-3 at the break.

Rovers never surrendered their lead throughout the second half and although Reilly kept the scoreboard moving from dead balls but the visitors couldn't reduce the deficit. A late goal extended Rovers' lead at the end.

Dowdallshill picked-up their second away win of the campaign, coming from four points behind at half-time to secure a richly deserved 1-12 to 2-7 victory.
Trailing 2-3 to 0-5 at the interval, the Dundak side were guilty of missing quite a few opportunities in that first half.
But on the turnaround, a more clinical approach was evident, and boosted by Gerry Mc Shane's goal, they outscored the home side 1-7 to 0-4.

Meanwhile Westerns came out on top at home to Cuchulainn Gaels on a scoreline of 3-14 to 2-7 at Reaghstown.

Ciaran Campbell got the home side off to a flying start as he found the net on six minutes and two goals inside a minute from Jack Ogle and PJ Marron saw the Westerns go in at the break with a 3-8 to 1-2 lead.

The Omeath men battled gamely in the second half and pulled a goal back but the Westerns held on to win comfortably.

Sean McDermotts travelled to Drogheda to take on Wolfe Tones where they recorded a 2-14 to 1-9 win.

While there was eight points in it at the end it could have been much closer, a combination of bad luck and poor shooting left the home side with only two points to spare at the break. The Sean’s goal was of lucky variety, with Evan Doheny being on hand to tap in following a goalmouth scramble,

The visitors upped their game in the second half thanks mainly to Trojan work by Lorcan Myles, Danny Commins and Patrick Osborne, the home side only managed to add one point to their tally in the second half.
