"Everything you know and love about the game is just thrown out the window"

Louth's Wayne Kierans

New Louth manager Wayne Kierans says he “wouldn’t be a fan” of the new experimental rules for football having witnessed them first hand at the weekend.

Louth fell to neighbours Meath last Sunday in a challenge match at Oliver Plunketts in Drogheda, where it finished 1-15 to 1-11 in favour of the Royals, and, speaking to the Irish Daily Star afterwards, Kierans was critical of some of the new rules which had been passed by Central Council the previous day for next year's Allianz Football League.

“They were okay,” he said. “Personally, I wouldn’t be a fan, but you just have to remain positive about it. They are in now.

“From a selfish point of view, I spent a lot of time getting ideas and philosophies to try and get to this level, methods to coach players, and this is all thrown out the window. Everything you know and love about the game is just thrown out the window.

“I was flabbergasted when I got a text at the weekend saying they (new rule) were introduced.

“When Cormac Reilly said, ‘We might as well play these’. I reluctantly said, ‘Yes’. It requires a mindset change from a coaching point of view, having implemented them, but you have to give it a go.

“You’d be foolish not to try and absorb them and have some sort of game plan around them.”
