Leinster Club IFC quarter-final: Mochtas bow out to Laois champions

St Mochtas Declan Byrne

COURTWOOD 2-9

ST MOCHTAS 1-10

St Mochtas bowed out of the Leinster Intermediate Championship when they lost out by two points to Courtwood at Ardee on Saturday afternoon.

There wasn’t much between the teams throughout the game but a second goal from the Laois champions 14 minutes from the end proved decisive as the Mochtas’ brave effort to rescue the tie in the closing stages fell short.

The visitors had gone six weeks since their last outing and the Mochtas looked to take advantage of that lay-off in the early stages as they took the lead on three occasions, only to be pegged back by Courtwood each time.

The visitors then grabbed the initiative when Luke Doran scored the first goal of the game to put his side 1-3 to 0-3 ahead.

However, with Declan Byrne, Gerry Garland and Jamie Farrell among the scorers the Louth Village side kicked five in succession before a late point for the visitors reduced the gap to 0-8 to 1-4 at half time.

It remained close in the early stages of the second half as the Mochtas went two up before the visitors hit a purple patch as a goal from Sean O’Flynn saw them take a 2-9 to 0 10 advantage with 14 minutes to play.

The Mochtas fought hard to get back into the game but were unable to find their range against a strong defence. With two minutes remaining they found themselves right back in contention when sub Danny Kindlon hit the net.

However, the Louth champions couldn’t get the second goal they needed to rescue the game and Courtwood held out for a two-point victory.
