Byrne undecided over AFL future

Carlton's Ciaran Byrne

Louth’s Ciaran Byrne has hinted that he may not see out his last year in the AFL with Carlton Blues.

The Louth village man was just a teenager – already established on the Wee County senior team – when he departed for Down Under five years ago. He is currently at home on a break and came off the bench last Sunday week to help St Mochta’s to a stunning IFC semi-final victory over Mattock Rangers.

He’ll still be around for the final against St Fechins and could well stay in Ireland to re-join brother Declan on the Louth senior squad:

“They want me back and they’ve been on the phone to me most days since I’ve come back to Ireland,” he told The Dundalk Democrat. “There are a lot of rumours going around the place, it’s all over Twitter. I’ve another year left on my contract, but I’m going through a process and weighing up my options over whether AFL is still completely for me.

“I’ve loved my time out there, I’ve been there for five years, but I’ve come home at the right time now, the Mochta’s are flying, there is talk of the new Louth stadium, and Louth have to announce a new manager. I’m due to go back in early November for pre-season.”
