ST PATRICKS 1-8

Nh Mairtin produced a dominant final quarter at Pairc Mhuire on Saturday evening to complete an impressive victory over St Patricks and book their place in the Louth Senior Championship Final for the first time in their history.

The Monasterboice side were good value for their victory having had the edge on their opponents for much of the hour and their impressive approach play was rewarded with some fine scores as they denied the Pats a return to the final.

The Lordship men battled throughout but they clearly aren’t they force they once were and their challenge faded in the final quarter as they were outscored by 1-5 to 0-1 by a Mairtins side who will be fancying their chances to get their hands on the Joe Ward Cup.

The Mairtins were strongly backed ahead of this clash and they illustrated their intentions early on as they kicked the first three points through Conor Whelan.

However, the Pats used their experience to get back into contention and a brace each from Conor Grogan and Paddy Keenan had them level at four points apiece five minutes before the interval.

At that stage the game burst into life as Conor Healy struck the first goal of the night only for Daragh Lafferty to find the net for the Pats almost immediately. The peninsula side edged ahead for the only time in the game when Dessie Finnegan landed a point but the advantage was short lived as Stephen Campbell rattled the net to see the Jocks lead by 2-4 to 1-5 at the break.

It was a blow the Pats never really recovered from although they were still in contention at the end of the third quarter as an Aidan McCann point had the deficit at to 2-7 to 1-7.

However, with Eoghan Callaghan and John Clutterbuck among those on target, the Mairtins kicked the next four points. A Paddy Keenan free on 48 minutes proved to be the last of the evening for the Pats as the Mairtins finished the job in impressive fashion with the help of points from Sam Mulroy and JP Rooney before Conor Whelan put the icing on the game with a late goal.
