DREADNOTS 5-9

DUNDALK GAELS 0-11

Dreadnots set up a Senior Championship semi-final meeting with Newtown Blues after securing a 13-point victory over Dundalk Gaels at The Grove on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the fact that they didn’t have to hit top gear for much of this game, the Clogherhead men were good value for their win over a Gaels side who battled gamely throughout.

The Dreadnots went into the game as strong favourites to advance and they set their stall out in the opening seconds when a quick break from the throw-in resulted in Cathal Lynch scoring the first goal of the game.

The Dundalk men looked to have weathered that storm when they suffered another setback as James Califf fisted in a second goal on nine minutes to help his side lead by 2-2 to 0-1, with Ger McSorley opening the scoring for the Gaels.

The Ramparts showed great battling qualities to get back into the game as points from McSorley, David Maloney and Eanna McArdle helped them cut the gap to 2-4 to 0-7 approaching the break.

Niall Lambert would have been happy to get his side in with that scoreline but his hopes were dashed when a Cathal Lynch point was followed by a Pauric Smith goal to put the Clogher team 3-5 to 0-7 ahead at half time.

Although the Dundalk side continue to battle in the second half they were unable to make any real inroads into the lead and the game was put beyond them when Liam Shevlin fired home a fourth goal on 40 minutes.

The Dreadnots cruised home in the final ten minutes with Smith putting the icing on the cake with a fifth goal, while the Gaels misery was complete when McSorley picked up a second yellow card.
