FL3 round-up: Young Irelands secure title and return to second tier

August 13, 2018

Young Irelands secured the Division 3 title and a return to Division 2 football next season after scoring a comfortable 0-20 to 0-3 win over Nh Malachi in their final outing at Courtbane on Sunday evening.

The visitors got off the mark inside a minute and were rarely troubled as they went on to lead by 0-10 to 0-1 at the break with points from Dermot Mone, Peter McStravick and Cian O Naraigh. Jake Kirwan scored the only point for the Mals.

The home side kicked the first two points of the second half through Padraig Moley and Colin Rooney but a comeback was never on and the Irelanders eased to victory with Derek Maguire, Oisin McCabe and Peter Nixon all on target.

Na Piarsaigh will consider themselves unlucky to lose out on the title on head-to-head as they made it 11 wins from 12 outings with a 6-13 to 1-3 win away to Dowdallshill.

Goals from Ciaran Murphy, Conall Shields and Eamonn McAuley saw the visitors by 4-9 to no score at the break.

In the second half Stephen Arrowsmith and Ciaran Murphy added goals, while Dowdallshill managed to score a consolation effort through Gerry McShane.

Cuchulainn Gaels will consider themselves unlucky not to have taken anything from their game against Sean McDermotts as they lost out on a 2-12 to 0-16 scoreline at Omeath.

The home side impressed in the first half and had points from Ray Phillips, Jody Keenan and Micheal McCabe as they went in leading by 0-9 to 0-7.

However, the game turned in the McDermotts favour when Tony Kelly and Kevin McMahon found the net early in the second half as their side went on to claim victory.

John Mitchels completed their season with a 2-11 to 1-12 win away at Stabannon.

Barry Kirk and Stephen Coyle scored the Mitchels goals while John Gallagher finished with five points.

The remaining games between Lannleire and St Nicholas, and Wolfe Tones and Westerns were postponed.
