KILKERLEY EMMETS 1-9

Reigning champions, Newtown Blues, progressed to the quarter-final of the Louth Senior Championship as they had seven points to spare over Kilkerley at The Grove on Sunday evening.

The Drogheda side went into this game strongly fancied to build on their opening round victory over Nh Mairtin and the didn't disappoint as a strong second half showing, which included a Thomas Costello goal, saw them safely through.

The Blues hit the ground running in this game as the fired over the opening three points through John Kermode, Colm Judge and Conor Branigan, before Kilkerley got off the mark through Shane Lennon.

With Dan McKeown and Shaun McElroy on target the Emmets got back to within a point on 22 minutes but the Blues kicked three of the last four points of the half through Ciaran Downey (2) and Kermode to lead by 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

The champions turned the screw in the third quarter to effectively settle the issue as they added seven points through Hugh McGinn, Judge, Brannigan, Downey, Ross Nally and Stephen Moonan. Kilkerley's only reply came from Shane Lennon as they slipped 0-14 to 0-5 behind.

Ciaran McGlynn came off the bench to pull a goal back for Kilkerley but that was cancelled out almost immediately by Thomas Costello to seal a comfortable win for his side.
