U10 boys:
Our u10 boys took part in the Joe Matthews Memorial Tournament on a glorious June Bank Holiday Monday. Playing St. Loman's in the first game we got off to a flying start dominating possession in the middle of the field and knocking over a number of lovely scores to rack up a convincing win. Next up was The Downs and this was a much tougher and tighter affair with two closely matched teams battling each other hard for possession and not giving an inch. The defence was marshalled superbly however and with our midfield increasingly taking hold in the middle third and moving the ball well we eventually pulled ahead in the second half to take a hard fought win. In the final group game we played Mullingar Shamrocks and knowing a win would ensure a semi-final place the lads tore out of the blocks and played some terrific free-flowing football to build up a solid lead by half-time. Shamrocks battled hard in the second half but our defence held firm and our support play and accuracy in front of goal paved the way for another solid win.
Next up was group winners Garrycastle in the Cup semi-final but the boys were not phased and supported each other well to cut their way through the opposition defence. The midfield snaffled up all the loose ball on offer while our defence mopped up and dealt with anything that came their way. With our forwards working hard to provide options inside we got another deserved win and we were in the final against Athlone. The game got off to an ominous start for Shandonagh as Athlone scored almost from the throw-in but despite being under the cosh for the first few minutes we gradually started to find our rhythm and matched the opposition score for score to lead by the minimum at the break. It was in the second-half that the boys showed exactly what they are capable of and every single player in the squad contributed in an impressive showing. Building on all the effort and skill demonstrated during the previous games the boys linked up really well and took their opportunities superbly. The opposition had no answer and the lads were delighted to hear the final whistle and take the cup for the first time. Special thanks to all parents and supporters on the day and to St. Lomans for hosting.
