Pete McGrath has stopped short of saying he regrets taking on the Louth job.

The Wee County's display against Carlow on Sunday bordered on embarrassing and their manager clearly cut a dejected figure after the final whistle sounded in Portlaoise.

"When you have lost a match like that, you feel not only disappointed but devastated. You don't regret it but you say I have maybe made better decisions in my life," he told The Irish Independent.

"But you go on, we'll see what the rest of the season holds, get the players together Friday night and try and sift through the carnage and the debris and man up for what lies ahead in the Qualifiers."

McGrath is without injured duo Jim McEneaney and John Bingham, while Paraic Smith, James Califf, Conall McKeever, Patrick Reilly, Padraig Rath and James Stewart have all made themselves unavailable to the Down legend. Prior to the Carlow game, Louth lost all seven of their games in Division Two.

"I found out early on with the unavailability of players and a couple of injuries that it was going to be a struggle," McGrath adds. "What the rest of the season holds I don't know but to date you have to say it has been a pretty calamitous season."
