Naomh Fionnbarra recorded a good win over Glen Emmets in Round 3 of the Paddy Sheelan Cup at the Louth Centre of Excellence, Darver on Friday evening.
Played on the astro turf pitch there was a good pace to the game throughout. The Barrs played against the wind in the first half but made a lot of the running and probably should have been ahead at half time due to a number of missed goal chances and anumber of point efforts dropped into the Glen Emmets keepers hands and were wide.
The movement of the team was good however and some of the inter-play from defence to forwards was quite good. Some of the good was undone by a sloppy goal conceded but the lads never dropped the heads and stuck to the game plan.
Half time score: Naomh Fionnbarra 0-7(7) Glen Emmets 1-5(8).
The Barrs improved in the scond half but were chaing the game for most of the half as the Emmets tacked on a few scores from play and from frees while the Togher men were still trying to find their range.
Once again the movement of the forwards was quite good along with the pressure on the Tullyallen backs as they cleared their lines. A long free into the Glen Emmets square by Jack Butterly caused panic and Eoghan Osborne pounced to give the Finbarrs the lead which they held until the end of the game.
The win was based on a solid defence which grew into the game and squeezed the life out of the Tullyallen forward line. The midfield pair worked hard throughout as did the forwards whose movement was smart and unselfish.
Not to forget keeper Daithi Woods whose kick-outs were rock solid and who made a number of good saves in both halves.
The win was also notable as a number of the panel were missing for various reasons and some of the younger players showed that they will have a big part to play this season.
The club would also like to wish Michael McGrane a speedy recovery as he had to be taken off after getting injured.
