No fire cert or safety file at Pearse Park

Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford.

With Longford GAA struggling to come to terms with the news that the stand at Glennon Bros Pearse Park must be knocked down, it has come to light that there was no fire certificate for the stand since 2006.

An engineer's report has found that the main stand has been damaged by structural subsidence. The extent of the subsidence is far worse than expected and leaves Longford with little option but to tear down the stand and build from scratch.

In an address to Longford Co Board, Eamon Collins from Collins Boyd Engineers and Architects said that the construction of the stand, which is the length of the pitch and also goes behind the south end, was on shallow foundations reports the Longford Leader.

When stunned delegates asked if the stand could be used at present Mr Collins said it was closed because of its current state and then added that no required fire cert was in place. The last fire certificate expired in 2006 and while an application was submitted for a replacement one, this had not been followed up on.

Mr Collins also said there was no safety file in existence, which would have detailed how the stands were constructed.
