Westmeath 2-11
Longford 0-10

After going 19 months without a competitive win, Westmeath have now won twice in the space of four days.

Tom Cribbin's charges followed up their one-point victory over DCU on Wednesday night with a seven-point defeat of neighbours Longford in Group C of the O'Byrne Cup at Ballymahon this afternoon. While both sides knew beforehand that they couldn't catch table-toppers Meath, it was still a keenly-contested affair for the most part until the visitors took complete control in the last 20 minutes.

Leading by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, Longford extended their advantage on the restart through a Brian Kavanagh free. Lorcan Smyth then put Westmeath in front with their opening goal, only for Enda Williams to level the tie at 0-8 to 1-5.

But it was all Westmeath after that with Kieran Martin grabbing their second goal. All of a sudden, things are looking up for the Lake County as they get ready to host Laois in the first round of the Allianz League.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Jack Sheedy's side who have an awful lot of improving to do before they open their league campaign against Leitrim.

In their three O'Byrne Cup matches, they scored 1-30 and conceded 6-41.
