Longford's ambitious Gaelic football development plan, which is aimed at transforming the midland county into All-Ireland contenders, was launched at last night's annual convention.
The plan '20/20 vision for Longford' will be overseen by former goalkeeper Damien Sheridan who is games development administrator in the county and focuses on areas such as elite player development programmes, a teacher training programme and the establishment of five development squads from U-13 to U-17.
One of those involved in drawing up the plan, Mick Hand, said it takes into consideration the threat burnout poses to young players.
"Some competitions were allowed drag on this year, which can be very frustrating for the young footballers involved, and players welfare must be a priority. Maybe a more defined master fixtures list could be put in place to sort out a few problems in the staging of the games," he said.
"Then there is the player burnout factor and obviously less competitions would help ease that serious concern. We studied all aspects of what has become a congested fixtures programme in the county and the removal of the Special Leagues is one of the suggestions."
There was just one contest last night which saw Eugene Quaine defeat Anthony Dooner by 47 votes to 39 for the position of assistant treasurer.
