Longford GAA land fails to sell at auction

Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, Longford.

A 40-acre parcel of land that Longford GAA purchased in 2009 for €380,000 failed to meet its reserve price of €200,000 at an auction in Pearse Park on Friday.

The land at Lyneen had been earmarked as the site for the county board's planned €3 million Centre of Excellence, but the economic downturn meant that the Centre never materialised and Longford has since turned its attention to developing a training facility on land owned by sponsors Glennon Brothers at Carrigglas Manor.

Just two parties showed interest in the Lyneen land, with bidding ending at €160,000. As this fell short €40,000 short of the lot's reserve price, it was decided that Longford county board would open negotiations with the highest bidder in an attempt to agree a sale price.
