Dromard Club Notes

August 27, 2018

Farewell to Fr. Corkery: On Sunday we said farewell to our Parish Priest for the last 27 years and the President of our Club, Fr. Eamon Corkery, who is retiring. Fr. Corkery's departure was marked by a short function in the Clubhouse, during which Club Chairman Michael O'Reilly presented him with a number 27 Dromard jersey, signifying his years spent in the parish. On behalf of Dromard GAA and the entire parish community, we would like to thank Fr Corkery for his 27 years of dedicated service to his parishioners. The widespread sadness at his departure is a mark of the high esteem in which he is held by the community. We would like to wish him good health in the coming years. As Fr. Corkery departs, we welcome Fr. Pat Lennon, a native of Drumlish, who takes over as Parish Priest of Dromard from next weekend. We wish Fr Lennon all the best as he takes up his new position.

St Francis Dromard Minor Club Notes

Minor Division 2 League Final: St. Francis vs Carrick Sarsfields: Weather and conditions were good in Maguire park for the occasion. St. Francis started strong and contested everything with some great scores from Dan Conboy, Joseph Hagan and Aaron Farrell. It was nip and tuck between the two teams coming up to half time. The second half started much the same as the first with lots of great battles throughout the pitch. 10 minutes into the second half St. Francis pulled the sides level. Unfortunately, that's as close as we got as a very strong and composed Carrick team finished the game in a much stronger position picking off points at pivotal times. The lads can be proud of themselves in getting to a minor league final and the manner in which they conducted themselves throughout the year. We would also like to thank all the travelling fans who supported us in Maguire Park. We'd like to thank the team and management for everything they have achieved this year. Our minor season will conclude as we are amalgamated with Colmcille for Division 1 championship starting 3rd September with a game against Longford Slashers at 7pm in McGee Park.

Dromard Ladies Club Notes

Senior Championship: We played our final match last Sunday against Clonguish in Pairc Na nGael, determined to win for the first time in this competition. After a cautious start by both sides, it was Dromard who took the lead with 2 goals by Sarah Reynolds and Shauna Hagan sandwiching a goal in reply from the visitors. With Michelle Kilkenny showing why she is the County keeper and some excellent work from the whole of the defence in front of her limiting Clonguish to just 4 more points, whilst Shauna Hagan (free) and Becky Maguire pointed, we were to reach half time with a slender one point lead. Unfortunately, that was as good as it got and in the second period Clonguish showed why they have been contesting the Senior Championship for so long. So our first taste of Senior Championship, although disappointing for the girls has given us an appetite for more, and retaining that status is now out of our hands. However, having achieved our initial aim for this season of promotion to division one early in the year, if we are pushed back into Intermediate we have shown enough skill and desire this summer to be back knocking on the door next year. Our thanks go to David Petit and his management team for their efforts, not forgetting the dedication of these girls both for Dromard and when County called stepping up and giving their best. From what your supporters can see you are all improved from last season and can look forward to next year with renewed vigour. Dromard Abu!

Minor Championship: Training gets under way this week and Championship starts at the end of the month. Due to our non-amalgamation with Colmcille this year we find ourselves in the B Championship. The competition is divided into 2 groups of 4 Clubs who will play each other on a league basis. Quarter finals will then be played across the groups, top Group 1 plays bottom Group 2 etc. Then open draw for semis and final. Thus we have a minimum of 4 games and a maximum of 6 if we reach the final. Response to togging out with our small numbers has been excellent, not only from our actual Minors but also from our U/16s and our older U/14 girls, although we can always do with a few more U/14s to bolster the panel. There is great spirit in our club when asked to answer the call, so let's give it a right good rattle and see where it takes us.

Underage Training: There is still a good turnout on Saturdays especially from our newest girls and we hope you have all enjoyed your first taste of football in Dromard. There is another blitz for these U/10s and U/8s coming up at St.Helen's on Sat 15 Sept, so good notice to finish the season on a high. Full details next week.

Clothes Collection: A chance to clear out your old clothes, bedclothes, curtains, towels and even footwear (if paired up) and take to our Clubhouse or Moyne Stores anytime between now and Thurs 20 Sept. As well as giving you all a chance to rid yourselves of last year's fashions and stuff the children have outgrown, it gives our club a great chance to raise funds which are always needed to meet the demands of running a successful club. So get foraging and remember all the funds we raise go back into giving the girls the best opportunity of enjoyment and fun, both on and off the pitch.

Birthdays: Only one this week and its Melanie Reilly. Have a lovely 13th birthday from all your friends in Dromard.
