Dromard club notes

July 30, 2018

Sympathy: Dromard GAA offers its condolences to the family of the late Paddy McEntire who died recently. In 1977 and again in 1982, a number of Dromard players, along with players from other clubs, visited the USA and Canada. On the first trip in 1977, a travelling party of 19 Dromard players was joined by others including Seamus Lee, Granard; Philip Kiernan, Ardagh; Paddy Smith, Mullahoran; Fergal McKeon, Sean Connollys and Michael Glennon (Glennon Brothers). The players visited New York, Washington and Toronto - where Pee McEntire and Seamus Prunty were based in 1977. The late Paddy McEntire was of major assistance in orgainsing the 1982 trip. He will be fondly remembered by his wide circle of friends. Dromard GAA was represented at Paddy's funeral mass and burial in Gowna cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Division 1 League: Best of luck to the senior team who take on Granard in Round 8 of the league on Saturday evening (4th August) at 7pm in Higginstown. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Championship Action in Páirc na nGael: Thank you to all the stewards, those who prepared the pitch and the facilities, to Peter Masterson on PA and to everyone who helped out at Páirc na nGael on Saturday evening as Dromard hosted a championship double header. A very large crowd attended and the event passed off smoothly. A special word of thanks to Denis Spollen for the use of his field for car parking. Well done to Fr Manning Gaels and Killoe on their victories.

Welcome Home: A warm welcome home to Ciaran Reilly, Crott, and his wife Michelle and their three children who are currently home from Australia. We wish them an enjoyable time at home with their family and friends.

Breffni 3 Province Challenge: Takes place on Saturday 4th August. Best of luck to everyone participating.

Reminder: Kicking off in all SuperValu stores nationwide on Thursday 22nd June, SuperValu will commence a nine-week programme which will see individual retailers donate 55,000 GAA 'First Touch' footballs to clubs across the country. Dromard/St Francis have joined up with Davis SuperValu Longford. All you need to do is when you spend €20 in Supervalu Longford collect your #Behind the Ball tokens and place them into the Club's box in store. If you find yourself in another supervalue then you can still collect the tokens and hand them in to someone in the minor club to get them into Longford or pop in yourself next time your near that SuperValue. This is great opportunity for the club to avail of some free footballs so please support.

Dromard Ladies Club Notes

Senior Panel: Our Senior Ladies were in action on Friday last when they travelled to Killashee to play the amalgamated team of Killashee/Ballymahon/Forgney in the third round of the Championship. A hard fought match was in the balance until the final whistle, but unfortunately it was Dromard who were to lose out in the end by a mere 2 points. That leaves us with 2 matches to play in the group stages with Mostrim away this Friday 3rd August, throw in 8pm. All support, as always will be appreciated at both matches, as the girls themselves and their management team are really putting the hard yards in search of a win.

Underage Roundup: Our U12s are now finished for the season as they just failed to make their Summer League Semi-finals, but 5 of that panel are showing great keenness in togging out with the Boys U12 Panel. Well done Naoise Hourican, Lauren Conboy, Elena O'Reilly, Meadhbh Carberry and Tara Gray. We can assure you they are not just making the numbers up, as they are all skilfull players, and their manager Noel Reynolds is sure they will all come back to us next year stronger players. If any more of that panel are looking for a bit more football this summer, contact Noel or Niall on their training nights.

U14s: Our U14s are very much still in action in their summer league, and played twice during the week. On Tuesday, they convincingly beat Killoe, but on Thursday lost out by 4 points to near neighbours Colmcille. This Thursday August 2nd sees the last group game at home to St. Brigids, throw in 7pm, and then we see if we make the semi-finals. Bring your A game on Thursday girls!

U16s: Due to lack of numbers our U/16s were unable to field on Sunday in the semi-final, which was hugely disappointing. However, with only a Panel of 6 girls this year, we were hugely reliant on our U14s making up the numbers, so we thank them and their parents for their efforts, even though it did mean 3 matches a week for some. With 4 of this panel also togging out and training with our Seniors to swell their panel, it shows the togetherness and camaraderie in the Club. Well done all of you.

Blitzes for U8 and U10: There are blitzes coming up for the next 2 Saturdays for this age group. The first on Sat 4th in Leo Casey Park Ballymahon at 11am, and the second is our own blitz on Saturday 11th August at 11am in Dromard. Concerning the blitz in Dromard, any offers of help, whether supplying and serving food and drink afterwards to the visiting clubs, or help out on the pitches during the morning will be greatly appreciated. Pleasering Imelda 0860875602 and tell her what you can do. We especially ask that the parents of the children taking part assist on the day if possible please.

Birthdays: Only one this week, so Happy Birthday Rachel Gray who will be 9 next Wednesday from all your new friends in Dromard Ladies Club. We hope you are enjoying your very first season with us.
