Dromard club notes

July 02, 2018

Sympathy: Dromard GAA club offers its sympathy to the family of the late Peter Kinlan, Rathmore, whose funeral took place last week. The club extends its sympathy to the family of Maureen Booth (nee O'Hehir), Doncaster, England and formerly of Pound Street, Arva, who passed away recently. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamnacha.

50 Years Ordained: Dromard GAA would like to congratulate Fr Eamon Corkery, Parish Priest of Dromard and the President of our Club, who was 50 years ordained last week. Fr Corkery has been Parish Priest of Dromard since 1991 and over this long period he has served the people of the parish with immense dedication. Fr Corkery is held in enormous affection by the parishioners of Dromard who have been fortunate to experience his ministry for the past 27 years. Despite lining out for his native Longford Slashers during his own distinguished playing days, Fr Corkery is a loyal supporter of the Dromard Club and we would like to thank him for his help and keen interest in our activities and wish him good health in the coming years.

Division 1 League: The senior league resumes this weekend with Dromard taking on Abbeylara in Round 6 on Saturday evening in Oliver Lynch Park. Throw in is at 7pm. All support would be greatly appreciated as we aim to collect two valuable league points.

Monthly Draw: Congratulations to the winners of our Monthly Members Draw for June. The €500 prize went to Joseph McNerney, Dublin/Edenmore while our four €100 winners were: Alison Jobe, Aughnacliffe; Peter Masterson (Jnr), Firmullagh, James Conboy, Ballinamuck; Michael Hyland, Gowna. Thank you to all our members for your continued support.

Summer League Final: Páirc na nGael hosted the Summer League Final on Sunday last between Ballymore and Colmcille. Thank you to the stewards and officials who helped out at the event and ensured it ran smoothly. Congratulations to our neighbours Colmcille on winning the title and well done to Ballymore on putting in a good performance.

Dromard Ladies Club Notes

Results: Our u16 girls had their first outing in the summer league at home to Mullinalaghta. We had a small panel out but great to see Ciara Maguire back out after an injury she picked up in the first game of the season. The girls worked hard throughout the game. There was some great work in the backline from Brianna Murphy, Leah Duffy and Aishling Farrell and they did well to keep the Mullinalaghta scores to a minimum. Louise Tierney had a good game in the goals and even made a move to the full forward line where she made a mark on the score sheet herself. Other scores came from Alyssa McErlean, Orlaith McGahern, Siobhan Murphy and Cathy Conefrey. Unfortunately it wasn't enough and Mullinalaghta ran out winners by 2 points. Hopefully we will have some more of the panel available for the next outing. Team: Louise Tierney, Leah Duffy, Aishling Farrell, Sarah Murphy, Brianna Murphy, Cathy Conefrey, Orlaith McGahern, Alyssa McErlean, Siobhan Murphy and Ciara Maguire.

The u12 girls also played Mullinalaghta on Monday at home and played some lovely football but unfortunately it would be the visitors who would emerge winners on this occasion. We see an improvement in this young u12 team week after week and they are a dedicated bunch that attend training with enthusiasm and we've no doubt that their winning ways are just around the corner.

The u10 panel headed up to the Ballymore blitz on Thursday evening. Despite being very small in numbers with only 5 girls attending namely; Sarah Buchanan, Lauren Maguire, Grace Tierney, Beighinn Courtney and Eaibhin Courtney. They played 3 games and played some lovely football and had impressive scores in all three games. Thanks to Ballymore for a great evening and a well run blitz that was enjoyed by all.

Disappointingly our u14 team were unable to field in their semi-final on Sunday last against Carrickedmond. It is a shame after all their hard work in the u14A Championship and training week after week. Not a lot can be done though when missing girls through Gaeltacht attendance and holidays. Hopefully we'll make a mark on the summer league and it's great to see a number of these girls out at u16 games too.

Our senior girls made their debut in the Senior Championship on Friday last in the glorious sunshine in front of a decent crowd at Pairc na nGael against Killoe. After a bright start from Dromard where Killoe were denied a number of scores by our hard working backs they finally made their mark on the scoresheet and once they got started it was hard to stopping them. We went into the break trailing 1-9 to 0-2 and although we registered 2 goals in the second half, courtesy of Becky Maguire and Shauna Hagan, it wasn't enough to hack away at the Killoe scoreline.

After this tough first game at Senior Championship we were given a wake up call as to the standard of senior football in the county and we regroup and prepare for our next game against Carrickedmond next Friday when we hope to have a more favourable result.

Fundraising: We held a Bag Pack in Dunnes Stores Longford last Friday and Saturday and we would like to thank everyone that supported us, whether it was helping to pack or by making a donation at the tills. A massive thank you to Dunnes Stores for allowing us to be there. These type of fundraisers allow us to grow our club and support our underage structure.

Underage coaching: continues on Saturday next 10:30 - 11:30 new players always welcome.
