Senior Football Relegation Battle Finishes All Square!

Rathkeale and Ballysteen came head to head in the all-important must win relegation battle which was played last Friday evening in Newcastlewest. Both teams served up an exciting game of football with the men from Rathkeale showing the early dominance and settled much quicker than their Ballysteen counterparts. Eoghan O'Connor pointed from a free in the opening two minutes with Mike Morrissey adding a good point from play on the 4th minute. Pa Ranahan pulled a point back from Ballysteen before Cian Shorten added a brace of points within a two minute spell on the 13th & 14th minutes. Rathkeale added two more points in what was certainly their purple patch when both Sean O'Shea and Eoin O'Donnell fired over. Ballysteen finally weathered the storm and found a couple of points of their own through Moran and O'Meara. Eoghan O'Connor pointed a free to extend Rathkeale's lead before M Ranahan pointed the last score of the opening half for Ballysteen to leave the scoreline reading 0-07 to 0-04 in Rathkeale's favour. Ballysteen made up for their slow start in the opening half as their stormed out of the blocks in the second half, scoring 3 points out of the next 4, coming from O'Shaughnessy & M Ranahan (2), while O'Connor fired over for Rathkeale. M Ranahan and O'Connor traded points once again before Shorten fired his third point on the 38th minute. Morrissey scored his 2nd of the evening for Rathkeale on the 40th minute, just before Ballysteen started to gain control of the game. O'Sullivan scored a point for the Bally men while M Ranahan continued his dominance, slotting to the net from the awarded penalty. Rathkeale bounced back however, Eoghan O'Connor pointed again as did Sean O'Shea, however there was still plenty of time for M Ranahan to find an equaliser. All square it finishes with the final score reading, Rathkeale 0-13, Ballysteen 1-10, both teams will have to do it all over again! Date, time and venue TBC for the replay at time of print.

Tom McNamara Memorial Cup

The family of Tom McNamara, late President of Rathkeale GAA Club, kindly presented a Memorial Cup to Rathkeale GAA Club to mark the memory of the great man for the years to come. Delighted with such a gesture, Rathkeale GAA Club would like to use the Cup to honour our Club Person of the Year on an annual basis going forward.

Actually the first function that the Tom McNamara Memorial Cup played was to facilitate the All Ireland Ticket Allocation Draw which was held last week. In case you weren't aware Timmy O'Connor, Denis Guiney, Louise Molyneaux, Ger Hegarty & Tom O'Toole were the 5 winners of the All Ireland tickets that were up for grabs! Well done to all and we hope you enjoyed the occasion.
