West Junior A Football Final

Fr. Caseys 2-04 Newcastle West 0-07

Fr.Casey's Junior team travelled to a stormy Feenagh Kilmeedy GAA grounds hoping to capture the lucrative West Junior A football title for the first time since 1962 and helping end a 55 year baron spell when they faced West Limerick derby rivals Newcastle West. Fr.Casey's were under no illusions coming into the tie as both sides had met previously in the competition where the men from the county capital prevailed and it was Newcastle west who kick started proceedings by kicking the first two points of the game. Fr.Casey's playing with the aid of a strong breeze start to use the natural elements to their advantage when an excellent cross field ball by man of the match Thomas Cahill found Packie O'Connor in space who in turn popped the ball to the on running Thomas Sexton creating a numerical advantage where Michael Keane was on hand to slot the ball over the bar. The next score of the game would be the move of the contest as patient build up inside the Abbeyfeale defence allow the men in blue and white to break at speed where a quick ball by Jamie O'Connor into the lively full forward Pa O'Connor who played a one two to Jamie O'Connor saw him headed goal bound to then rattle the back of the Newcastle West net. Both men would again be involved in the next Abbeyfeale score when Packie O'Connor passed a low ball down the wing to Pa O'Connor who was fouled enabling Jamie O'Connor the opportunity to convert from 30 yards out which he dually obliged. Both sides would then trade points the first coming from placed ball for Newcastle West which was quickly follow by a point from play by Thomas Sexton. Fr.Casey's would go on to finish the scoring of the half when Jamie O'Connor step up to a 35 yard free won by Cathal Broderick to allow Fr.Casey's lead going into the break on a score line of Fr.Casey's 1-04 Newcastle West 0-03.

Abbeyfeale entered the final thirty minutes of the game with knowledge that they would have to batten down the hatches defensively if they were to grind out a victory and to their credit all involved stood up to the challenge through good quality discipline and limiting the Newcastle West attack who were now playing with a gale force wind to a hand full of score. Newcastle West would however reduce the score to the minimum when kicking three unanswered points all coming from frees, however the men in blue and white would rally again and kick what would be the decisive score of the game when Pa O'Connor at the third time of asking got onto a double rebound shot from Jamie O'Connor to roll the ball through the narrowest of spaces into the Newcastle West goal. Newcastle West began to throw the kitchen sink at the Fr.Casey's defence who showed through resilience to derail the Newcastle West attack. Newcastle would go on to kick the final point of the game from play however this would not be enough as the day belong to the men from the banks of the Feale who ran out victors on a final score line of Fr.Casey's 2-04 Newcastle West 0-07. Captain fantastic Maurice O'Connor accepted the West Junior A trophy an behalf of the Fr.Casey's junior team and addressed both teams and supporters brilliantly. Fr.Casey's juniors now add an amazing fourth cup to their trophy cabinet and march on to the county quarter final stages.
