West Junior A Football Championship

Fr. Caseys 1-11 Cappagh 1-09

Fr. Caseys Junior A Footballers qualified for the West Semi-Final last Friday evening when they recorded with a hard fought 1-11 to 1-09 victory over Cappagh in Newcastle West. In a game which Fr. Caseys needed to win or else their season was over, it was Cappagh who started the brightest and lead by 4 points mid-way through the first half. Despite a nervous start Fr. Caseys slowly became more dominant as the half progressed and reduced the deficit to a single point by the half time whistle. Fr. Caseys resumed the second half in positive fashion, quickly drawing level and then capturing the lead they would not relinquish. Despite having the bulk of possession and the vast majority of scoring chances, which included two kickable goals, Fr. Caseys never managed to put clear daylight between themselves and their opponents. As we entered injury time, Fr. Caseys held a two point advantage and Cappagh were now pushing hard for a last gasp goal. Thankfully the Fr. Caseys defence supervised by the reliable Joe Kelliher held firm to record a massive victory and put Fr. Caseys into a West Semi-Final with Monagea on the third weekend of August. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 1-11, Cappagh 1-09

County Minor Football Championship

Fr. Caseys 1-08 Newcastle West 3-10

Fr.Casey's minor team took to the field of play for the first time since their long break away from competitive action due leaving cert exams. Hoping to continue on their winning ways from where they left off at the start of the season the side welcomed major West Limerick rivals Newcastle West to a balmy Fr.Casey Park. It was the home side that started the better of the two teams when a Newcastle shot dropped short into the hands of keeper Eoin Scannell who found midfielder Ronan Cross in space who in turn delivered a superb ball into target man Connie O'Connor which resulted in a foul on the big full forward that finally was converted by DJ Stack. Resilient pressure by the Abbeyfeale forwards made life difficult for the Newcastle defence to break out beyond their own 45 yard line and with this pressure mounting Fr.Casey's man Ronan Cross incepted a Newcastle pass which enabled him to drive through and slot the ball over the black spot. Nevertheless Newcastle began to find their feet and soon kicked the next two points of the game to draw the sides' level for the first time. The score of the half was to come courtesy of the boys in blue when a free won from an Abbeyfeale kick out by the hard working Ronan Cross who quickly kicked a delightful cross field ball to wing forward Kevin Foley who dashed onto win the ball make space and convert from 30 yards out to hand the initiative back to the Fealesiders. However two minutes later the side would be level once again through a Newcastle point from play. The men from the county capital would then go on to claim the first goal of the game when a Newcastle 45 drifted high into the edge of the Fr.Casey's square which Abbeyfeale failed to contest resulting in the Newcastle midfielder securing the ball and turning shapely to rifle the ball into the back of the net. Fr.Casey's to their credit did not drop their heads and responded appropriately by converting the next two points, the first coming a free won at midfield which was then transferred front to centre forward Tadhg Callahan who used his pace to move through the Newcastle defence and create an overlap for Martin Coughlin who raised the white flag from play. Abbeyfeale capitalised from the resulting kick out won by the determined Ronan Cross who himself drove the ball over the bar to reduce the deficit to two points, unfortunately this would be the closest Abbeyfeale would get to their rivals for the remainder of the game as Newcastle now began to show their true qualities especially in attack when combining their speed and off the ball support play to make inroads on the Fr.Casey's defence. These qualities started to paid dividend in the final 10 minutes of the half as Newcastle went on to kick the last three points to leave the score board at half time displaying a score line of Fr.Casey's 0-05 Newcastle West 1-06.

Newcastle started to increase the intensity level of this game from the very first minute of the second half when winning the restart and delivering a low trajectory ball into the troublesome full forward resulting in a point from play. Newcastle would go on to further inflict more pain to the home side when they creped inside a disjointed Fr.Casey's half back line resulting in exposure of their full back line which the men in black and white exploited through utilisation of space and player overlaps found the back of the Abbeyfeale net. Fr.Casey's still maintained their fighting spirited and replied with point and goal of their own to bring them right back into the tie. The point courtesy of Connie O'Connor on the 38th minute was quickly following by a goal from Ronan Cross when a free won from the resulting kick out was delivered to Cross who found himself inside the Newcastle 21 yard line to pounce and shake the visitors goal net. Unfortunately for Abbeyfeale their drive to get back into the game was short living as Newcastle responded immediately from the kick out with a goal of their own putting seven points between the sides. The closing stage of the tie would see both sides trade scores on the double the first being provided by Newcastle from play which four minutes later would be cancelled out by the boot of Ronan Cross from a placed ball. Once again Newcastle would raise the white flag first only to have Ronan Cross oblige from a dead ball situation. Towards the closing stages of the match Newcastle began to show their superior fitness levels to help them close out the game and be rewarded with the final score of the half through a point from play on the 55th minute granting them victory on a score line of Fr.Casey's 1-08 Newcastle West 3-10. The club would also like to wish Killian Begley a speedy recovery after he had to be removed from the field of play mid ways through the first half due to injury. We hope Killian will be back gracing the training grounds in the coming weeks.
