County Senior Football League
Fr. Caseys 1-07 Rathkeale 1-12
Fr. Caseys Senior Footballers travelled to Rathkeale last Wednesday evening to take on the home side in the county league. Rathkeale opened the scoring but points from full forward Eamon Flaherty and captain Sean Harnett soon followed to put Fr. Caseys in front. Rathkeale levelled proceeding with their second point of the night but soon after Fr. Caseys were awarded a penalty at the other end. Up stepped John Riordan who confidently blasted the ball to the bottom corner of the net giving the keeper no chance. As the first half progressed however it was Rathkeale that proved the more clinical in front of goal adding 7 more points to the scoreboard compared to Fr. Caseys 2 point return. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 1-04, Rathkeale 0-09.
Both teams traded scores early in the second half to keep the margin within one score but then with 15 minutes to go Rathkeale were handed a penalty and a chance to finally put some daylight between the side. Former county player Eoin O'Connor stepped up and made no mistake. Fr. Caseys battled gamely but failed to challenge for the lead from this point onwards and Rathkeale held on to record a 5 point victory with a final score of Fr. Caseys 1-07, Rathkeale 1-12. Both teams meet in less than a month in round 3 of the county championship. This will be a game to make or break our season. Hopefully on that occasion Fr. Caseys will deliver the goods and gain revenge for county league and west championship defeats suffered so far this year.
County Junior Football League
Fr. Caseys 1-09 Gerald Griffins 1-17
Fr. Caseys Junior Footballers took on Gerald Griffins last Thursday night in Ballyhahill in Division 4 of the county league. With wins against Abbey Sarfields, Cappagh and Croom already under their belt, Fr. Caseys were anxious to continue the winning streak but taking on a team flying high in the county intermediate championship was always going to be a big ask. Gerald Griffins raced into an ealry lead with 4 unanswered points before Tristan Harnett opened Fr. Caseys account. Gerald Griffins responding with a goal to extend their lead to 6 points. A second point from Tristan kept some respectability on the scoreboard but 5 unanswered points from Gerald Griffins stretched their lead to 10 points. Fr. Caseys were facing a long night from this point but instead of throwing in the towel they dug deep for the closing stages of the half. Points from Kieran Foley and Jamie O'Connor reduced the margin to 8 and then the new kid on the block Packie O'Connor netted a fantastic goal, finding space behind the defense and calmly slotting past the on-rushing keeper. Fr. Caseys were unfortunate not to reduce the margin further on the stroke of half time with Griffins clearing off their goal line. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 1-04, Gerald Griffins 1-09.
Gerald Griffins kicked the opening score of the second half to quell any notions of a comeback. Fr. Caseys matched their opponents score for score for much of the second half but the lead was always at a comfortable length for the Ballyhahill men. Fiachra Cotter was unlucky not to net a goal in the closing quarter which would have made the finish a lot more interesting but it wasn't to be. Fr. Caseys can be happy with their performance against a Gerald Griffins team that will challenge for intermediate honours later this year. The full time score was Fr. Caseys 1-09, Gerald Griffins 1-17.
