Senior County Football Quarter Final

Fr. Casey's 0-13 St. Patricks 3-11

They say goals win games and on this occasion it can definitely be said. Fr. Casey's dominated the opening five minutes of exchanges in this County Senior Football Championship Quarter-final and showed real intensity but an intercepted pass resulted in a St. Patrick's goal and a major shift in the flow of the game. Adrian Enright had scored a point for the Abbeyfeale men before this goal but just after, St. Patrick's scored four in a row before a Cormac Roche brace of points and another by Eoin Joy brought life back to the team in blue and white. The last ten minutes of the half was end to end with both sides registering two more scores each. Fr. Casey's scores came from Seamus Lenihan and through a pointed free from Adrian Enright. Only that solitary goal separated the sides at the interval and it was still very much game on. Almost immediately after the restart, the city side their lead with a point from play. Fr. Casey's responded immediately however and hit a purple patch to bring the difference back to one point with Daniel Daly, Derry O'Connor and Paudie Browne all getting on the scoresheet. St. Patrick's hit back again however in dramatic fashion with a goal, which ultimately left too much to do for the Abbeyfeale players. The goal was followed up with another point by the city side and Fr. Casey's had no choice but to push forward and leave gaps in the defence. Over the next five minutes, both teams traded points with Adrian Enright scoring two more for Fr. Casey's and Derry O'Connor getting his second of the game. With only minutes remaining and Fr. Casey's in all-out attack, St. Partick's broke at speed and after a well worked move, were awarded a penalty for a foul inside the square. The penalty was dispatched to the back of the net and with nine points the difference, it was as good as game over. However, the Abbeyfeale men did not give up and tried to the end with team captain John Riordan scoring two more points before the final whistle sounded. Unfortunately, it was not to be this year but all of the management and players must be commended on doing their club proud and working very hard throughout the year.
