The plight of GAA clubs losing players to America for the summer has been highlighted in Limerick.

In total, 39 players from 26 different clubs across the county have departed for the States reports the Limerick Leader.

New York, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago are the destinations for the players, the majority of which left in the wake of Limerick senior hurlers' exit from the championship.

Of the Limerick under-21 hurling panel, eleven of that squad has gone to the U.S for the summer and nine senior hurlers who all sampled championship action this year have signed for clubs stateside.

Four members of the senior football squad had already departed as players are granted oversea sanctions for the next couple of months.

Once the sanctions are in place, players cannot line out for their own clubs for 30 days.

This means that Limerick clubs will be affected by the mass exodus as the club championship pick up full steam over the coming weeks.

This is a common occurrence across every county in the country and an issue that the GAA has been forced to recognise and deal with in the future.
