Championship Weekend

Fr. Casey's GAA Club have a busy weekend to look forward to with the senior, minor and junior teams all seeing championship action. On Friday evening, our senior team will play Pallasgreen in Kilmallock while on the same evening our minor team host Monaleen. Seamus McNamara's junior team will play Monagea on Sunday to round of the weekend of play. We wish all players and management teams well and look forward to seeing many Abbeyfeale supporters in attendance to cheer them on.

Senior County Football League

Fr. Casey's 1-10 Drom/Broadford 0-15

Fr. Casey's played Drom/Broadford in Raheenagh on Friday evening in the final game of the County Senior Football League. A good start by the Abbeyfeale men was led by Kevin O'Connor, John Riordan and Adrian Enright as they each contributed with fine scores. Drom/Broadford brought a high intensity to the game and attacked with a lot of pace with many of their scores coming on the counter attack. At half time Fr. Casey's held a one-point advantage and were in a strong position but some concern was shown by management for half back Sean Harnett. Only minutes prior to half time, Harnett had to leave the field of play due to extreme cramping but fortunately the medical team were able to ensure he resumed his position mid-way through the second half. With just ten minutes to go Fr. Casey's had a lead of five points and looked to be collecting another win in this competition. Cormac Roche had scored a fine goal from an acute angle and throughout the field, the men in blue and white were gathering and maintaining possession of the ball. However, this control was lost as the game neared its finish with Drom/Broadford gathering momentum with every minute that passed. Seven unanswered points left Fr. Casey's two behind and unfortunately for John Colbert's team, they could not raise another white flag before the referee blew the final whistle. For much of the game the teamed performed well but management will be disappointed not to have held on for the win in what was the final game before the championship outing against Pallasgreen this Friday evening.

Junior A West Football Championship

Fr. Casey's 1-10 Newcastle West 2-09

Tournafulla hosted this intriguing encounter between local rivals Fr. Casey's and Newcastle West last Sunday evening. The Abbeyfeale men found themselves two points down early on as the team was slow to settle into their rhythm as the combination of young, and less young players began to gel. The first point for the Abbeyfeale men was scored by Thomas Sexton who ably converted a free. This point was followed up by a fantastic individual score from Pa O'Connor soon after. The Newcastle West men hit a purple patch for the next ten minutes with the aid of the wind and scored three on the trot before Fr. Casey's responded with a Paudie Smith free. A Denis Fitzgerald point from play and another Sexton free brought the sides level before Joe O'Flaherty of Abbey Tyres & Car Sales steered the ball past the oncoming Newcastle West goal keeper to finish off a great Fr. Casey's attack and put three between the sides. Michael Keane followed this score up with a point, before the team wearing black and white finished the first half scoring with a goal of their own to leave just one point between the sides at half time. This lead didn't last long into the second half however as Newcastle West started the second period very brightly. A quick point was followed up with a goal and now the game needed a response from the Abbeyfeale men. Keane delivered a much needed point, for what was his second of the game, before Newcastle West hit back with two more in what was becoming an exciting end to end battle. Keane, who had his scoring boots on, registered his third and this seemed to spark the other Abbeyfeale men into life. Joe Kelliher and Johnaton Lyons scored a point each as Seamus McNamara's men piled the pressure on their opponents in search of a levelling score. A breakaway point at the other end of the field, however, left Fr. Casey's with too much to do and in the end the two-point margin separated the sides. The team has a great blend of youthful exuberance and strong experience and we hope the performance will inspire some confidence in the players for the next round of championship.

Night at the Dogs

On Saturday August 13th, Fr. Caseys GAA Club will be gone to the dogs. This summer our club begins a major field improvement project and the main fundraising event to finance this redevelopment will be our Night at the Dogs at Limerick Greyhound Stadium.

The club are currently selling Nominator and Buster tickets for this event, priced at €20 and €10 respectively. The Nominator tickets, with a 1 in 6 chance of being a winner, will give you free entry to the race night and if your nominated dog comes first then you will win a fabulous hamper. These tickets will be primarily sold to club members, players and supporters within Abbeyfeale. The Buster tickets, with a 1 in 720 chance of being a winner, will give you free entry to the race night and if the race finishes in your given sequence you win a €500 cash prize. These tickets will be primarily sold in neighbouring towns and villages with ticket sellers hitting the roads every Monday and Thursday evening for the coming month. We would really appreciate assistance from all club members with ticket sales, the more than merrier as this will be quiet a big undertaking. We are also very grateful to everyone that purchases a ticket for this event.
