West Minor Football Championship Round 4: St. Kieran's 5.8 Claughaun / Old Christians 6.12

The minor footballers suffered their first defeat of the campaign with a disappointing loss at the hands of the Childers Road combination on Friday evening last. The manner of the defeat was quite disappointing given we led by four points at the break and created a large number of goal scoring opportunities throughout the game despite finding the back of the net on no fewer than five occasions. We left ourselves open at the back far too often in the second period which contributed greatly to the defeat but on a positive note we created a large number of chances which one would hope we will begin to take in our upcoming games. We remain in top position in the group on scoring difference at present with three more games to play against Shannon Rangers, Ballysteen and Knockaderry/Monagea. Victory in these games is essential if we are to secure a semi final berth in the championship.

Team vs Claughaun / Old Christians:

Rober Bradley, Eamon Ambrose, Diarmuid Mulcahy, Tomas Mullins, JJ Cronin, Darragh O' Connor, John Buckley, Cillian Ambrose, Kaelan O' Connor, Brian McCarthy, Patrick O' Connor, Noel Callanan, Colm Copse, Darragh Breen, Stephen Copse, John Hayes, Eoin Burke, Edward Fitzgerald, Michael Murphy, Larry Ward

West Junior B Football Championship Playoff

St. Kieran's 0-12

Glin 2-07 (A.E.T.)

The junior B footballers exited this year's championship after a last minute Glin goal on Sunday evening last in Askeaton. The game was evenly matched throughout with little separating the sides. We started well with early scores from Raymond Brouder, Owen Hayes and Sean O'Connor. Glin then began to come into the game and found the net shortly before half time to give them the advantage at the interval. We trailed by 1-03 to 0-04 when Davy Dillane blew for half-time.

Glin began the second half as they left off and were dominating the possession stakes at the beginning of the second half. They raced into a 1-05 to 0-04 lead midway through the second half. Credit to our boys, they recomposed themselves and mounted a comeback. Raymond Cahill and substitute Dara O'Connor pointed twice to level the game going into the closing stages. We had a late free from 30 metres to win the game in normal time but this sailed agonisingly to the left of the post and wide. At the end of normal time the teams were deadlocked on a score line of 0-08 to 1-05 with extra-time needed to find a winner.

We were the more prominent team for the majority of the extra-time and looked to be heading for victory when Killian Enright and a Raymond Brouder free put us two points clear entering the home stretch. However, a long probing delivery into our square from a Glin midfielder resulted in a penalty being awarded. The spot kick was despatched to the net past Robert Bradley and with that our participation in this year's West championship was ended.

We would like to thank John Dineen and Patrick Histon for the time and effort they put in organising and preparing the panel the games. It provided valuable game time for younger players which will hopefully stand to them in their respective under 18 and under 21 championships.

Panel: Robert Bradley, Eoin Moran, Nicky Kelly, Daniel Barrett, John Byrnes, Raymond Cahill, Anthony Mullins, Timmy Carroll, Sean O'Connor, Raymond Brouder, Niall O'Shea, Aenghus Gannon, Killian Enright, Cillian Ambrose, Owen Hayes, Larry Ward, Darragh Breen, Dara O'Connor

Senior Football

The County senior football championship resumes this week after a break of almost two months. We play Drom/Broadford in Newcastle West tomorrow evening in Round 3 of the competition. We have 3 points on the board from our opening games with a victory over St. Patrick's and a draw against Oola. However, tomorrows night's game will present a huge challenge for our boys against the standard bearers of Limerick club football over the past 15 years. Drom/Broadford have an array of talent in their squad and have the medals to prove. Hopefully our recent West final appearance will have helped in terms of preparation for this tie. We appeal to all supporters to turn out and get behind the panel.

U14 Football Challenge

We travelled to Dromcollogher last Sunday for a challenge game. This was a fine tough match and our panel of 16 lads played well. It was good to get this challenge match before our next championship game so thanks to Drom for hosting us on the day.

U16 Football

We played Abbeyfeale on a wet evening last Monday in Coolcappa. We had a strong panel with a few missing on the night. Really this game was over very early with the first half showing us go in on a score of 5 5 to no score. We played well throughout this game and in fairness also missed some chances during the match. The game ended on a score of 8 11 to 2 points. Well done boys and looking forward to the next match.
