Junior A Hurlers Lose Out to Monagea

After securing an impressive victory over Templeglantine in round 2 of the West Junior A Championship our hurlers were back in action in Newcastlewest last Saturday evening with Monagea providing the opposition. This was always going to be a difficult encounter with Monagea sitting pretty in 2nd position in the group. It was Monagea who began the brighter, pointing twice inside the opening two minutes through the center and full forwards, however Rathkeale responded well when they fired to the net through a well taken goal from Sean Sheahan. Seamus Keating and Eoghan O'Connor then pointed twice more either side of a Monagea point. The game ebbed and flowed with Monagea tagging on 4 more points from their dangerous center forward either side of points from Rathkeale's Keating, Quaid and O'Connor. On the 30th minute came a killer blow from Monagea as they found the net from their corner forward with the interval whistle looming. Half time score, Rathkeale 1-08, Monagea 1-10. Rathkeale once again made a bright start to the second half with further points from Eoin O'Donnell, Keating, Quaid (3) to leave Rathkeale 1 point ahead approaching the final quarter. Could they close the game out, unfortunately not and it was Monagea who came back into the equation hitting 8 points without reply, mainly through the hands of their dangerous center forward who was the main man on show. Rathkeale pointed a late consolation score in injury time through Quaid but it was Monagea who came out on top winning on a score line of 1-19 to 1-13. All is not lost for Rathkeale however. With Killeedy beating Templeglantine, this ensures Rathkeale have finished third in the group which means they will progress into the quarter final with a tasty fixture against Croagh\Kilfinny to look forward to in early August. The journey continues.
