Junior B Football - Knockaderry edge out Rathkeale in thrilling West League Final

Both Knockaderry and Rathkeale made the short journey to Ballingarry to contest the West Junior B League final last Sunday evening. With the teams having already met in the group stages, Knockaderry entered the game as hot favourites having trounced Rathkeale in that earlier match. However, it was Rathkeale who began this game the brighter and Cian Shorten fired over in the opening minute. O'Sullivan responded with a pointed free before Tommy Dillane kicked a fine point of his own on the 7th minute. O'Sullivan kicked two more points for the Knockaderry men who were now leading despite Rathkeale's dominance and playing with the aid of a stiffish breeze. Sean White pointed for Rathkeale, however once again Rathkeale were guilty of kicking two more wides from O'Riordan and O'Connor. Hannon and Egan tagged on two more points for Knockaderry while Sean White pointed for the second time during a scrappy phase of the game when Rathkeale lost their composure and discipline with Shorten and Costello picking up unnecessary yellow cards. Half time score; Knockaderry 0-05, Rathkeale 0-04. Rathkeale refocused and settled themselves which resulted in a well worked point that was finished by Patrick Wilmott as the game resumed. Cian Shorten pointed twice, either side of an O'Connor point for Knockaderry. Sean White fired over his third point, this one from well out on the wing while Hannon responded with a point of his own for Knockaderry before Shorten pointed again for Rathkeale to put them two points clear with 13 minutes remaining. O'Sullivan brought the scoreline back to the minimum, with a well taken point, while Hannon slotted his shot to the net with a breakaway goal on the 51st minute to put Knockaderry two points up in this enthralling 'ding-dong' affair. Hannon pointed immediately from the resulting kick out. Costello pegged one point back for Rathkeale. Duffy then fired over for Knockaderry, once again leaving 3 points between the sides which left Rathkeale chasing the match for that all important goal. They were a couple of half chances with Knockaderry clearing superbly off the line after Shorten's high kicks were causing consternation within the mixer. Shorten did manage another point himself before another one of his missiles dropped short and broke to Timmy O'Connor who fired over the bar when Rathkeale were begging for a goal. Final whistle, Knockaderry 1-10, Rathkeale 0-11. Rathkeale's efforts were all in vein but there are many positives to be taken from this very enjoyable league campaign. They will be disappointed in losing the final however they can look forward to a positive Championship with the spirit and bond they have built. Congratulations to all in Knockaderry and we will look forward to the next battle in the Championship which will be the third meeting between the sides, it would remind you of the Dublin V Meath battles in the early 90's!!

Rathkeale Team: Gearoid Mulcaire, Timmy O'Connor, Jimmy Dillane, Donal Garvey, Kevin O'Shea, Patrick Wilmott, Padraic Jones, Brendan Costello, Jack Coleman, Aaron O'Connor, Sean White, Barry O'Riordan, Tommy Dillane, Cian Shorten, Evan Lenihan, Subs Used: Martin Roche for Barry O'Riordan

Junior A Hurling Championship - Comfortable win for Killeedy over Rathkeale

Rathkeale opened their Junior A Hurling Championship campaign last Friday night when they made the journey to Quaid Park, Coolrue, to take on strong favourites Killeedy. The favourites tag was well deserved as it was Killeedy who stormed out of the blocks and registered 3 points on the score board in the opening 5 minutes through Cremin, Culhane and Aherne. Damien Quaid opened Rathkeale's scoring account on the 7th minute through a placed ball. The two Aherne's put Killeedy into a commanding lead then as they hit 3 unanswered points in a 4 minute spell. However, credit to Rathkeale, they managed to claw their way back into the game and enjoyed their purple patch when they hit 5 unanswered points of their own through O'Donnell, Quaid (2) and Hourigan (2). Killeedy tagged on one late score to leave the scoreline 0-08 to 0-6 at the half time interval in Killeedy's favour. Killeedy began the second half in similar fashion to the first half and once again they raced into a commanding lead with points from Mullane and Aherne (2). On the 38th minute, Shane Hourigan gave the Rathkeale men a ray of light when he rattled the net from a free before J Aherne hit a brace of points once again to keep Killeedy's scoreline ticking over. Shane Hourigan pointed again for Rathkeale as did Seamus Keating, however, this was to be Rathkeale's last score of the game with 13 minutes still remaining. Killeedy ran riot in this final quarter racking up 1-07, the goal coming from the penalty spot late into injury time. Not our night unfortunately, Killeedy were just far superior in all departments and the final scoreline reflected that, Killeedy 1-20, Rathkeale 1-08. Rathkeale will hopefully pick some positives after they dissect the game, the 15 minute spell before half time being the highlight and hopefully they can bounce back when they play Templeglantine in the next round in early July.

Rathkeale Team: Darren Jones, Martin Roche, Patrick Sheahan, Jack Coleman, Seamus Keating, Sean O'Shea, Gary Enright, Paul White, Eoin O'Donnell, Damien Quaid, Padraic Jones, Shane Hourigan, Aaron O'Kelly, Eoghan O'Connor, Mikey Morrissey, Subs Used: Timmy O'Connor for Padraic Jones (45min)

Senior Football Update

With a mixed start for Rathkeale's 2016 senior football campaign they now await their next fixture. Having secured two draws in the All County league and a loss and a well-earned draw to Fr Caseys in the Championship Rathkeale now wait for their postponed league fixture at home to Pallasgreen to be rescheduled. This leaves Rathkeale second from bottom in the Championship however there is still very much to play for as there is no runaway leader within the group. Meanwhile in the league, Rathkeale sit mid table, 4 points adrift of table toppers Oola.
