Kildare manager Joe Quaid admits to being perplexed by the refusal of some players to join his squad.

The Limerick native revealed that a number of players had been asked in to join the squad, but they decided against it, leaving the county manager puzzled.

The Lilywhites lifted the Kehoe Cup following victory over Maynooth University last Sunday, but they step up in class this weekend when they host Carlow in the opening round of the National League.

Quaid told the Leinster Leader that he is happy to work with the squad that he has, but can't understand why a player would not want to play inter-county hurling.

"What we now have is by and large what we'll be working with but the most disappointing thing in Kildare is that we approached an awful lot of players but they are not willing to commit," said Quaid.

"They are looking to go back to concentrate and improve with their clubs but if you want to improve then the best way to do that is to train and play with the best, so it baffles me because coming from a traditional hurling county if you got an invite to go into the county team then you'd take it with both hands."
