Monaleen GAA Tennis Club Notes

• The Winter League continued to produce excellent performances from our club representatives over the weekend. Monaleen TC's Grade 5 team of  Ruth Buckley [Captain], Michelle McCarthy, Pat O'Shaughnessy and Sorin Slavescu welcomed Rushbrooke Tennis Club from Cobh on Sunday. The Monaleen team were in devastating form! The ladies won their doubles match 6-4, 6-4 while the men won their doubles match 6-2, 6-2. In the mixed doubles there was no let-up and Michelle and Pat won 6-1, 6-4 while Ruth and Sorin won 6-2 6-2. A 4-0 win for Monaleen in quite testing windy conditions. Well done. Poor Cobh had a long journey back without even the satisfaction of winning one set! Our team has safely qualified for a home fixture in the quarter finals in 3 weeks' time. See our Facebook page and website www.monaleengaatennisclub.com for more details

• Our Grade 3 team were given a walkover at the weekend and are also safely into the knockout stages. The final two matches of the round robin stage take place next weekend. We have two teams on the road. We wish Brendan Carragher and his Grade 4 team the best of luck in Cork against Ballinlough TC on Sunday. A 2-2 draw will see the lads through there. We also wish Ian Murray and his team the best of Luck in Waterford on the same day against St. Anne's.

• Our AGM took place on Sunday 31st January in the clubhouse. Our Chairman James Doran welcomed Ian Murray onto the committee as Vice Chairman, Pat O'Shaughnessy as vice-captain and Morgan Mansfield as a new member of the Games Committee. Thanks lads. James specifically thanked Niamh Meehan, Secretary for her wonderful contribution to the club over the last 12 months. James also thanked Eithne Harty, Treasurer, Rioghna D'Arcy Registrar, Jennifer Colford, Junior Committee Chairperson, Gillian Carragher and Declan O'Dálaigh Captains and their committees, the coaches, Sorin Slavescu for his work on the new Website and all other members who have given of their personal time to ensure another successful year for the club. All officers have kindly agreed to continue in their roles in 2016 which is greatly appreciated by the club. All reports presented at the AGM will be available shortly on the website. Like every other club, the tennis club needs to find new members for committees in order to drive the club forward with new ideas. The Junior committee in  particular is crying out for  members so if you can help in any small way [as little as an hour a month of supervision], please contact any of the officers for info.

• A reminder for any new members to the club that we run a friendly Tuesday evening tournament for all levels starting at 7pm and a tennis ladder/box league is in operation for players at all levels. For Tuesday, just turn up, for the Box League contact Ian Murray at [email protected] . The timesheets are displayed at the noticeboard so why not come up and book a game for yourself during the week or at the weekend. Tokens for the lights are available from the bar @ €3 for 45 mins. Coaching is available from any of our 4 qualified coaches by contacting Jennifer Colford or any committee member. So, no excuses everyone! Get out there and practice your tennis and get value for your membership. We need someone to stop Djokovic from winning another 5 Australian Opens and it looks like we can't depend on Andy to stop him!!
