Limerick hurler Seamus Hickey has been elected as the new chairman of the Gaelic Players Association.

Hickey succeeds Dónal Óg Cusack in the post after the Cork man stood down at this afternoon's AGM following 13 years of service as non-executive chairman of the GPA.

A member of the national executive committee for the last three years, Hickey has been a focal part of the association and recently oversaw the successful Fenway Hurling Classic which took place between Dublin and Galway in Boston last Sunday.

Dublin footballer Paul Flynn, who was also on the national executive committee with Hickey, replaces the outgoing David Collins of Galway as secretary, whilst President Dermot Earley was returned unopposed.

Speaking at today's AGM in Athlone, Murroe-Boher club man Hickey considered his election to be an honour.

"I am honoured to be elected as Chairman of the GPA today," he stated. "As a county hurler I realise the ability of the GPA, through the Development Programme, to make a profound difference to the lives of players who need to achieve balance in their lives due to the commitments involved in their sport.

"I look forward to playing a leading role in the GPA and working with the staff and officers in supporting our county players."
