Senior Hurling
Last Sunday week in the Gaelic Grounds Ahane saw their hopes of a 2015 Senior Championship title dashed when we lost to Adare in a County Quarter Final replay.
Replays seldom bear resemblance to drawn fixtures and this match was no exception. Whereas the teams were level on nine occasions in the drawn match, in this encounter, Ahane only led for a brief period in the first half when an excellently taken goal by corner forward Johnny Fox to the corner of the net raised Ahane's hopes. Thereafter, Adare took control and with an ample supply of quality ball to the inside forwards, fired over a succession of points to establish a seven point lead at half time. Ahane were not playing well at this stage, management made some significant positional changes at half time and introduced some fresh players.
In the second half Adare opened their account first to put them eight points ahead but thereafter Ahane showed their traditional fighting spirit and fought their way back into the game. John Meskell exerted his considerable influence when he was returned to his more customary midfield position and ball started to get in among our forwards. It is to the teams credit that they were prepared to fight with such determination when the cause seemed lost, When one ponders a blockdown on Killian Enright after a pass by Johnny Fox in the first half and two goal chances created by Richard Ryan in the second half (one skimmed the crossbar and the other hit the side-netting), the end result could have been different. Niall Moran did snatch a quality goal late in the second half. However, on the day, Adare were the better team and deserved their win, we wish them well in the remainder of the championship.
On the plus side for Ahane is that this developing team introduced some very promising players during the season, the experience gained will bear fruit in future years. Ones to watch out for are William Shanahan, Stephen Power, Ciaran O Mara, Mark O Halloran and other emerging young players. Paul O Halloran was having a great year until injury hindered his progress.
With the injured full back line men of Cathal Ryan and Cathal O Reilly still unavailable, the team that lined out was in goal, Jonathan Hayes. Brian Meskell, Dan Morrissey and Patrick Meskell were the fullback defence. The Half back line was Jeffrey Enright, Mike Carr and Seamus Harnett. The midfield pairing was Tom Morrissey and Ciaran O Mara.
The half forward line was Paddy Morrissey, Niall Moran and Paul O Halloran. The main line of attack was Johnny Fox, John Meskell (Capt) ad Killian Enright. Stephen Power was very effective as adefender when introduced whilst Richard Ryan got some good points and looked very dangerous when he came on.
Well Done
To Tom Morrissey who was selected on the U/21 hurling team of the year.
Best of Luck
To referee Mike Flannery and his team of officalls who will be in charge of the County Senior Camoige Final next weekend.
