Co. U16 Div 1 hurling Final:
Mungret St. Paul's 1-15, Kilmallock, 2-9.
Mungret St. Pauls came of age as Limerick's new underage hurling kingpins when they captured the Co. U16 Div 1 hurling title in Rathkeale last Sunday evening in an absorbing contest. Kilmallock & Mungret had met in the u14 and U15 finals in the previous two consecutive seasons with Mungret winners on both occasions but they had to fight to the pin of their collar to complete this hat trick. Against the strong breeze, it was Kilmallock who started brightly when Lorcan Casey drifted in from the left to slot an early goal. Pointed frees by Paul O'Brien kept Mungret in this before they were rocked with a second goal by Gearoid Barry. Kilmallock remained to the fore for much of this opening half with the benefit of these 2 green flags, however just before half time, Mungret responded with one of their own when Luke Fitzgibbon who started wearing no 19 goaled to leave them 1-10, to 2-2 in front.
Wind assisted for the second half, Kilmallock started brightly with 2 points from play from David Woulfe and pointed frees from Liam English. However for all the domination, they failed to convert this on the scoreboard with some terrible wides from frees and from play while Mungret on the break were much more efficient. Other than the opening half goals and David Woulfes brace after half time, all Kilmallocks scores came from placed balls. Keith McInerney, Paul O'Brien and sub Seamus Hurley all chipped in with points to see keep Mungret in front to the end.
With the U16 hurling title in the trophy cabinet, Mungret have still to look forward to Co. U14 & U13 hurling finals to possibly add to this success and also their first ever Féile na n Gael title earlier this year.
A cup, to honour the memory of renowned referee Shane Hourigan was donated to Bord na nÓg by members of Shane's family. Afterwards, they presented Mungret joint captains with the Shane Hourigan memorial trophy.
