Minor County Championship
Fr. Caseys 2-13 Newcastle West 1-07

Fr. Caseys Minor Footballers took o Newcastle West last Wednesday evening in their final group game in the County Championship. Both teams went into the game with unbeaten records. The prize for the winner was a place in the county semi-final while the loser would still qualify for the quarter finals. Newcastle West kicked the first point but this was soon cancelled out by the lively Thomas Sexton. A well taken goal by Conor Horan on five minutes put Fr. Caseys into the lead and further points from Thomas Sexton and Pa O'Connor extended the margin to 5 points. Fr. Caseys could not have asked for a better start with their defence battling for every ball and their attack full of energy. The large crowd present were also enjoying the fine football on display. Two pointed frees from Newcastle West reduced the deficit but Thomas Sexton replied with a brace of points. Once more Newcastle West and Thomas Sexton exchanged points before midfield Michael Keane stepped up to convert from a free. With 5 minutes left in the half Pa O'Connor breached the Newcastle West defence and rattled the net for the second goal of the night. Points from Newcastle West and Thomas Sexton followed before the break to leave the half time score Fr. Caseys 2-08, Newcastle West 0-05.

Newcastle West claimed the opening score of the second period with a pointed free but Michael Keane was equally as accurate on free taking duties to restore the 9 point advantage. Points from Pa O'Connor, Thomas Sexton and another well struck free from Michael Keane soon followed to effectively end the contest. Newcastle West continued to battle and scored 1-01 in the final quarter but the final score of the night went to Michael Keane with a point from play to leave the final score Fr. Caseys 2-13, Newcastle West 1-06. This was a very impressive performance from Fr. Caseys with all players looking very sharp and determined. Thomas Sexton and Pa O'Connor were extremely clinical in front of goals and midfielder Michael Keane was also very accurate on free taking duties. The management team will be looking for more of the same for the remainder of the championship but tougher tests await and Newcastle themselves minus some regulars will also be a different prospect come October. Nothing is won yet and there's still a lot of hard work ahead but this minor team is definitely heading in the right direction and the football been played is a joy to watch. Well done to all involved.
