Junior Hurling

West Junior A Hurling Championship Quarter Final
Askeaton 0-13 Kileedy 1-15
Tuesday 11 August Feenagh
5 points adrift in Feenagh
Unfortunately our Championship run ended on Tuesday night in Feenagh. With both sides looking towards young number 15's in Willie O'Meara for us and Paudie Ahern for Kileedy to take the frees, it was these 2 county minors that had the majority of the scores on the night. Our second half performance does not reflect the lads ability and Kileedy's goal put them out of reach in the last 15 minutes.
Kileedy started with a point in the first 90 seconds of the match, Willie replied within a minute with a well taken free. All of Kileedy's full forward line had scored from play in the first 8 minutes to lead by 2 points. We scored 6 times in the next 10 minutes without an answer. Conor Ranahan made an excellent save as he came out to the 13 and stopped the ball with his body. His clearance was kept in by Declan as he showed some excellent skill to flick the ball in from the line. Mark Ranahan won a free on our own 65 that Willie pointed 10 minutes in. Our backs were playing intelligent Hurling and gave short passes when needed. Rob was solid as always in full back and was beating his man to the ball constantly. Kileedy had a small but extremely fast and agile forward line but we did well to slow down their delivery of ball to their danger men in the corners. James picked out Conor Barry in the corner and Matthew pointed from the left after he got free with the ball. We were scoring every minute at this stage but our tactics were countered by Kileedy utilising a sweeper for the rest of the match.
Conor Ranahan was excellent in goal and his puck outs were regularly reaching Sean and David in the forwards. Willie pointed from another Free that Matthew won on the left wing to give us the lead for the first time in the match after 12 minutes. Dervan sent a long ball to Matthew who picked out Willie in front of goal and he struck it over the bar. The full forward line were working together excellently, but credit must be given to the half back line of Pakie, Dervan and Mark. They were setting up many of our scores and were winning the Kileedy puck outs. Matthew pointed expertly off his left side after David Holland and Sean Whelan fought for the ball on the left side. We had one of our best goal chances of the match as Shane Gallagher tore through the Kileedy defence and was in on goal when Kileedy's number 4 dragged him down by jumping on his back. There was only a yellow card awarded for this move and we got the point from the free to leave us 4 points ahead after 17 minutes. A goal at this stage would have put us in a much more favorable position at half time. Kileedy narrowed the gap to a point in the next 8 minutes with 3 unanswered points. Our midfield and Half forward line were playing unselfishly and linked up well to set up the full forward line for their scores. Conor Barry was unlucky not to score a goal as his shot hit the side netting. Rob and Alan were working tirelessly in the full back line as Eoin Cuddihy played a third midfielder role. Willie got the last score of the half as he pointed behind his own 65 from another Free to leave us 8 points to 6 leaders at half time.
Our lead was quickly erased in the first 4 minutes of the half as yet again we returned from the break worse than our counterparts. The Kileedy full forward pointed from a sideline on the right side, this was quickly followed by a free to level the scores. Willie O'Meara was unlucky not to score as he struck on the ground but it eventually went wide. Kileedy regained the lead in the following minutes from a free. James won a free in the middle of the field after another county minor Cian Magner Flynn struck on him. Willie stepped up and pointed to level the score at 9 points apiece 38 minutes into the match. Both teams got another point each on their boards 5 minutes later. Matthew was held on the left wing as he tried to win the ball and from the resulting free Willie pointed. The pivotal score if the match came a minute later as Kileedy's 10 and 14 linked up well to put an unstoppable goal in the back of our net. It rebounded in off the post and was their only real goal chance of the match. Kileedy retained the lead for the rest of the match and we could only score 3 more points in the next 15 minutes.
Conor Enright was brought on for Declan Guerin and made a great contribution with his first play. He caught the sliotar and ran into space. Conor Barry got free from his man and received a great pass, beat his man and pointed. Kileedy kept the goal difference as they pointed from play yet again a minute later. With 10 minutes left David Holland won a puck out and the free after being fouled. Willie pointed from the right wing 65 yards out to narrow it to 2 points again. Kileedy got 2 points from placed balls in the next 5 minutes as our discipline let us down and the sizable Kileedy support motivated their men. We used 5 of our sub's but the game was already out of reach and with Kileedy playing very defensively we were never close enough to goal to get a shot in. Willie got one last point from a free but it was too late in the match. Kileedy got the last score of the match as Cian Magner Flynn pointed from play.
The score was 1-15 to 0-13 at full time and Kileedy's second half performance sees them into a semi final. They'll be looking for a championship this year after dropping down from Intermediate level. Many of our players had a tough schedule coming up to this match and it was seen in our second half performance. This team has a strong underage structure behind it and with 5 of our starting team still under 21 next year we will have an improving team over the next few years.
After the lows of last year this was a real accomplishment for the lads. All of the lads did the club proud on Tuesday and thanks must also be said to Dave, Nicky, Vincent and Rocky for all the hours they put in throughout the year and the 30+ training sessions. All the team and management gave up their own time throughout the year and will do it all again next year in the hopes of going further. Thanks also to the great support we got in the last few months.

Minor Hurling

Templeglantine 3-6
Askeaton 2-16

We travelled to Templeglantine on Sunday morning to play them in the third round of this years minor championship. After a good win against Feohanagh last week the lads were confident but knew we were never going to get anything easy here.
Conditions deteriorated as soon as the sliotar was thrown in and it went from a light drizzle to persistent rain for the whole game and this did not make it easy to play hurling, Credit to our lads from the first whistle they contested every ball and we always seemed to find a player in a bit more space to get the scores. Willie O Meara scored our first from a free won by Cian O Connell just inside the oppositions half. He also popped up with the next two out wide on the right hand side of the field one passed from Richard Hayes and the second a great ball won by himself. We had been totally dominant in the first 10 min but then Templeglantine struck for the first of three first half goals. Our lads responded immediately with a goal of our own, Cian O Connell won a ball in the middle of the field and played it into Jamie Moran who saw Richard Hayes free and he blasted to the back of the net. After this we got  back on top and Willie tagged on three more points, two came from good passing by Darragh Ranahan and one from a free when John O Shaughnessy was hauled down on the 45. We then exchanged a few points which saw Templeglantine score three points to our one. This came from some good build up play when Brian O Mahony cleared a great ball up the wing to John O Shaughnessy who beat the defender and slotted it over the bar. Then Templeglantine struck for their second goal which had the score 1-7 to 2-3 with 21 minutes gone. We got two more points before half time a second from John O Shaughnessy and another from Willie, but Templeglantine weren't finished and got their third goal just before the half time whistle to leave the score Templeglantine 3-3 Askeaton 1-9.

We had been so dominant in the first half the lads couldn't believe that the match was a draw, but they lifted themselves up and we saw them continue the dominance that they had in the firs half but in the second half we saw our 5 backs Killian Ferris, Darragh Horgan, David Hanley, Jamie O Sullivan and Brian O Mahony up their performance which kept Templeglantine to only 3 point in the whole of the second half. We made a change between the posts for the second half with Evan O Donoghue stepping in for Killian Ferris who moved to left back for Chris Kelly who had a good first half. Our first score of the half came from a free from Willie after David Hanley went on one of his trademark runs only to be hauled down. Our next came from the hurley of Jamie Moran after  Richard Hayes won a scrappy ball around the middle of the field and played it into Jamie to tap it over from close range. Cian O Connell and Willie O Meara were working between the two 45s to sniff our any chance for the Tournafulla forwards and with Darragh Horgan clearing anything that came  his way we were well on top. Our next score came form a clearance from Darragh Horgan to Cian O Connell into Cian O Keeffe to shoot from a tight angle over the bar. Willie O Meara got the  next two, one from play and the second from a foul on Jamie Moran who was tormenting the Templeglantine full backs along with Cian O Keeffe. Our Half forwards John O Shaughnessy, Richard Hayes and Darragh Ranahan were really playing well and were the footing for most of our scores, any ball played into them almost always ended up with a score. The only goal of the second half was ours and came from a penalty when Jamie Moran won a ball on the 21 and had nothing in his head only goal and just as he was about to shoot he was taken down and the referee was left with no choice but to award the penalty. Willie stepped up and placed the sliotar in the top left hand corner, the goalkeeper didn't even move. The last Change was Jeff Duggan for Jamie Moran and the same as the week before he was very unlucky not to get on the score sheet when he won a ball in front of goals and laid it off but it ended up wide of the left hand post.

The final score was Templeglantine 3-6 Askeaton 2-16 which leaves us with three wins from three with two more games in the group away to Croagh and at home to Rathkeale. We will be looking to try top our group if possible, to guarantee a county semi-final spot but with tough games ahead our lads are looking forward to the battle.
