Junior League Final
Shannonside 3-8 (1-4) Newcastle West 1-1 (1-0)
Limerick city side Shannonside won the Junior League title on Saturday in Adare defeating Newcastle West by 3-8 to 1-1. The side which is a development project combining players from Monaleen, Treaty Gaels and Mungret St Pauls achieved success in only its second year competing at this level.
Shannonside would have been slight favourites going into the match based on some strong results in the group stages but faced a Newcastle West side who were a strong blend of youth and experience. Both sides had injury-enforced changes from their previous encounter so a tightly fought encounter was expected and that was what occurred.
The West Limerick side had the better of the opening exchanges and opened the scoring with a goal after only 3 minutes. In a tight opening period Shannonside closed the gap to draw level. However a Caoimhe Lyons goal 5 minutes before the break put Shannonside ahead for the first time. Niamh Tuite added a point from a free before the break to leave the score at half time Shannonside 1-4 Newcastle West 1-0.
The second half saw Shannonside take control and a second goal for Caoimhe Lyons two minutes after the break gave them the dream start and created a mountain for Newcastle West to climb. But Newcastle West fought on and exterted pressure only to be denied by Chloe Duggan in the Shannonside goal. Three points in quick succession from Sinead Madden, as Newcastle pressed looking for a goal, put the result beyond doubt and Eva Bromell's late hand-passed goal was the icing on the cake.
Shannonside were deserving winners by 3-8 to 1-1 and captain Niamh Tuite accepted the cup from Ger McNamara to delight of their supporters.
