Rathkeale could soon be playing host to Allianz League games after the Munster Council pledged its support to a proposed Centre of Excellence in the west Limerick town.
The Irish Examiner reports that the provincial body has agreed a €500,000 financial package with the Limerick county board that will see the latter's debts written down by €233,000, with the remaining €267,000 being earmarked for development works in Rathkeale as well as minor works at the Gaelic Grounds.
The funding will enable the Treaty County to proceed with the development of the Centre of Excellence which will comprise dressing rooms, a gym, meeting rooms, car parking facilities and a 2,500 seater stand.
"The grant is a massive boost to Limerick GAA," Limerick PRO Eamonn Phelan said.
"We had a board meeting on Tuesday night and everybody was in favour of this, as you can imagine.
"The money will be very important in terms of finishing off the development in Rathkeale, the timeframe is around 12 months or so. It will be used by underage and adult Limerick teams, so it's a project that is vital for the future success of Limerick.
"Ideally, you'd be hoping that Rathkeale could be used for national league games too rather than having to open up the Gaelic Grounds for every match."
Limerick GAA has already received €350,000 towards the Rathkeale project from Croke Park. The total cost of the project is expected to be €1.1 million.
