Minors:
We played our opening fixture of the 2015 13 a side champoinship against Glenroe on Sunday morning, with only 4 players that started on the team who narrowly lost out to Bruree in last years county final and barely scraping 13 players this was going to be a tough test especially for our younger lads and they didn't dissapoint.
We had a bad nights rain and there was a feile Match on beforehand but the field was in good shape. We started with a flyer with some great points from Willie O'Meara, John O'Shaughnessy and Cian O'Connell and raced into a 7 point to 1 lead inside 12 minutes. Glenroe did not lie down and struck the net twice in the space of 5 minutes and tagged on a point also. This could have been more only for super defending from Jamie and the boys, then another great point from Cian O'Connell after beating two Glenroe backs ensured it was a level game even though we were playing some brilliant hurling at the time. Then came the first of our two goals It came from a long ball played into Jamie Moran who started full forward, the ball was slightly over hit and the Glenroe keeper came out to clear it and fumbled under pressure from Jamie. Vetween the full back and the keeper Jamie managed to take possesion for the sliotar only to be fouled and Mike Mann had no choice but to award a penalty. Willie stepped up and struck the back of the net to extend our lead once again to 3 points. This seemed to bring a bit of confidence bact to our lads and Cian O Keeffe from center forward tagged on two points to leave the score line at half time 1-9 to 2-3 .
After a quick chat with the lads all you could say was more of the same, but Glenroe didnt travel half ways accross the county for nothing. They started the second half much better than us and raced into a one point lead with a goal and a point even though our backs were outstanding, Darragh Horgan, Chris Kelly, Brian O'Mahoney, Jamie O Sullivan and Colm Sweeney were always with their men and 9 times out of ten they were first to the ball and clearing their lines. They also got some great defensive help from the two wing forwards John O'Shaughnessy and Darragh Ranahan. Being a point down at this stage our lads seemed to get back into the rhythm that they had in the first half of finding their own men with some clever passing, and it was from this we got the equaliser and never really looked back. It was a ball won in the backs by Jamie O Sullivan who gave a simple 10 yard hand pass to Cian O'Connell who put the ball into the hand of Cian O'Keeffe 40 yards away. He struck a cracking point over his right shoulder. Willie O'Meara followed this with another cracker from the sideline 50 yards out. We seemed to be playing with great confidence now and a long ball played in by Cian was just dropping over the bar when the Glenroe keeper batted it out and who was there, only Jamie Moran to smash it to the back of the net. Another point from Cian O Keeffe had us now 4 points clear. We exchange the next two points with Glenroe and one of which came after some more great work from Max Scully who broke a ball into the path of Willie to slot over the bar. With about 6 minutes on the clock and a 4 point lead it was always going to be a nervy finish but our lads didnt panic and again Cian O'Connell broke a ball out to John O'Shaughnessy who was on the 65 out on the stand sideline and he hit a super point. Willie O'Meara hit two frees in the closing stages and then some great defending from Colm Sweeney who laid the ball off to Cian O'Connell who played a 35 yard pass accross the field to Willie who was standing all alone in the middle of the field to slot over the last score of the game.
