Ahane club notes

March 31, 2015

Ahane travelled to play Doon in the U/14 Feile hurling quarter-final on Sunday 29/03/15. There is great credit due to both teams for serving up a very exiting match despite the very stormy conditions.

Ahane captain, Ronan Fox won the toss and elected to play against a very strong wind.  The Ahane team were under severe pressure in the 1st half and they can thank goalie William O Leary (who made a number of vital saves) and full back line of Rory Clothier, Padraig Harnett and Kevin Morrissey for ensuring that no goals were conceded in the 1st half.

The half backs of Aidan Carroll, Andrew Shanahan, Sean Quirke and midfielders Peter O Grady, Adam Murrihy provided great cover in front of the Ahane goal and prevented a number of Doon attacks.

However, Doon broke through on a few occasions and scored a total of 5 points in this 1st half.

Despite having very little possession, the half forwards of Tom O'Hanlon, Ronan Fox, David Brennan and full forward line of Mark Donnellan, Conor O Brien, Tom Marsden put in a huge effort in the first half to keep the play in the Doon half which gave some relief to  the Ahane backline.

On one such occasion from a free by O'Grady, the ball broke to Brennan who pulled 1st time and drove the ball to the back of the net.  This was a vital score against the wind and meant Ahane only trailed by 2 points at the break.

Ahane made a few positional switches at halftime and moved Harnett to midfield and O'Grady to centre-forward.  Ahane then took control of the game and quickly levelled with scores from Harnett from play and O'Grady (free).   Following a number of attacks which were repelled by the Doon backline, O'Grady broke through and drove the ball to the bottom corner.  This gave Ahane a 1 goal lead.

Glen Jones came on at corner back and helped ensure that Doon did not score in the 2nd half.  Denis Hayes, Shay Doyle and Jack Barry came on in the full forward line.  They put in a huge effort and set up points for Murrihy, Brennan and Harnett (free) to leave a final scoreline of Ahane 2-05 to Doon 0-05.

This was a tremendous effort by all the players and great credit is due to them.

This team are now in 2 semifinals - Football V Oola on 2nd April and Hurling V Na Piarsaigh on 12th April
