County Junior Football League
Fr. Caseys 1-10 Galtee Gaels 1-05

Galtee Gaels made the long trip to Abbeyfeale last Saturday to take on our Junior A Footballers in the opening round of the County League. Playing with the strong wind Fr. Caseys made a very impressive start with 3 points inside the opening 5 minutes. First Sean O'Donnell struck a point, next Donagh Kelly scored from a free and then midfielder Kevin O'Connor raised the white flag. Donagh was soon back on free duty and once more he converted to stretch the lead to four points. With his midfield partner having scored Eamon Flaherty wanted to get in on the scoring act and he did so in style, reacting quickest to a broken ball he showed his soccer skills to round a defender and blast the ball off the ground to the net. A brace of points then followed from Donagh Kelly, the first setup by Paudie Smith while the second was a magnificent long range kick from Donagh. After working tirelessly in the opening half Paudie Smith finally got on the scoreboard with a point on 20 minutes. Galtee Gaels who had been on the back foot for most of the half kicked their opening point on 22 minutes. Before the break Donagh Kelly added another point to his tally to leave Fr. Caseys with a comfortable 1-08 to 0-01 half time lead.

Facing a strong breeze Fr. Caseys knew they faced a more difficult second half. Galtee Gaels reduced the margin to 9 points with the opening score of the half. A pointed free from Donagh Kelly restored the 10 point cushion and on 15 minutes Donagh added another point from play to all but settle the contest. To their credit Galtee Gaels battled right until the end and outscored Fr. Caseys by 1-02 to no score in the final quarter. The Galtee Gaels goal came courtesy of a penalty. In the end Fr. Caseys still had 5 points to spare winning by 1-10 to 1-05.

West Senior Football Championship Semi-Final
Fr. Caseys 0-08 Newcastle West 3-09

Fr. Caseys travelled to Tournafulla last Sunday evening to take on local rivals Newcastle West in the semi-final of the West Championship. An early point from the lively Billy Quirke put Fr. Caseys into an early lead. Newcastle West soon levelled and then took the lead with their second point from play. On 10 minutes Newcastles full forward breached the defense and rifled the ball to the top left hand corner of the net. With their confidence now up Newcastle West added two more points one from a free before Fr. Caseys responded. After being on the back foot Fr. Caseys finally had their period of dominance and kicked four unanswered points from Daniel Daly, Billy Quirke, Maurice Gleeson and Sean O'Donnell to reduce the margin to 2 points. Just when it looked like Fr. Caseys were in control Newcastle West struck with two very well taken goals in the final five minutes of the half to lead by 3-04 to 0-05 at the break.

Facing the strong breeze Fr. Caseys had a mountain to climb in the second half and when Newcastle West stretched the lead to 9 points with a pointed free that task was made even more difficult. Credit must be given to the players who battled hard and dominated much of the second half. Three consecutive points from Sean O'Donnell, Derry O'Connor and Billy Quirke gave Fr. Caseys faint hop but Newcastle West finished the stronger to kick the last four points of the night and run out comfortable winners by 3-09 to 0-08. It was a night where Newcastle West were clinical in front of goal, scoring three great goals, while we failed to click in the danger area. Our work rate and effort can't be faulted however. With a month to county championship and 4-5 players to be added to the panel this is not a result to look much into.

Limerick Footballers
The Limerick Senior Footballers played Clare last Sunday in round six of the National Football League in Newcastle West. Languishing at the foot of the table and with only two games remaining, victory was a must for the Shannonsiders to maintain their Division 3 status. Leading by four points at half time but facing a strong second half breeze it looked an uphill battle for Limerick but they produced a brilliant last quarter to run out 2-10 to 1-05 winners. The final league game for Limerick will be a trip to Drogheda next Sunday to play Louth. Victory in this game will guarantee Division 3 survival. Best of luck to all involved especially Paudie, Robbie, John, David and Chris.
