West Senior Football Championship
Fr. Caseys 4-17 Rathkeale 3-10

Fr. Caseys Senior footballers faced Rathkeale on St. Patricks Day in the West Senior Championship Quarter Final in Tournafulla. A tough test was expected and it was Rathkeale who registered the first score with a point on 3 minutes. A free from John Riordan levelled proceedings before a Thomas Collins point put Fr. Caseys in front. Points from play from John and James Riordan and a Robert Browne free furthered stretched the lead before Rathkeale kicked their second point of the day. Midway through the half and two minutes of brilliance put Fr. Caseys well on the road to victory. First John Riordan stepped up to convert a penalty and within a minute James Riordan rattled the net again with a well taken goal from play. A point from Cathal Broderick extended the lead to 10 points on 20 minutes before David Ward got in on the goal scoring act. Rathkeale kicked two consecutive points to reduce the margin but Cathal Broderick and James Riordan raised another two white flags before the break to leave the half time score Fr. Caseys 3-08, Rathkeale 0-04.

A pointed free from John Riordan began the second half scoring before Rathkeale converted a free of their own. Jonathon Lyons introduced at half time then added his first point of the day before Rathkeale kicked a brace of points. Points from Robert Browne and Maurice Gleeson then extended the margin to 14 points with just over 15 minutes to play. With the contest now over, the final quarter saw both sides
neglect their defending duties and throw more bodies into attack. The only disappoint from a powerful Fr. Caseys performance was that fact Rathkeale kicked 3-03 in the final quarter. On a positive note our own attack managed another 1-05 so when the final whistle went we still had 10 points to spare. The fourth goal of the day went to Keith Harnett with John Riordan, Robert Browne, Thomas Collins, David Ward and Sean O'Donnell adding the points. The final score was Fr. Caseys 4-17, Rathkeale 3-10. It won't be a game we will look too much into as Rathkeale were noticeably under strength but credit still is due to our players who produced a very good performance. Next up in this competition is an encounter with Newcastle West in the Semi-Final. The date for this match has yet to be announced.

West Intermediate Football Championship
Fr. Caseys 0-08 St. Senans 1-09

Fr. Caseys Junior Footballers travelled to Mick Neville Park Rathkeale last Friday night to face St. Senans in the quarter finals of the west intermediate championship. Both sides had faced each other in last years final with St. Senans running out comprehensive winners. With another uphill battle facing them, Fr. Caseys knew they needed a positive start and that is exactly what the players delivered. A brilliant long range point from Donagh Kelly gave Fr. Caseys an early lead. St. Senans soon levelled and then took the lead after 10 minutes with their second point of the night. Chris Smith and Kevin O'Connor were winning the midfield battle and up front Donagh Kelly, Cormac Roche and John Lane were causing St. Senans plenty of problems. The teams were level with 15 minutes played and this was just reward for the hard worked shown. St. Senans were also dangerous in attack and could have raised the green flag on more than one occasion only for some great saves by Sean Scannell. Seamus Lenihan was also excelling at commanding the defence. The team exchanged points before St. Senans kicked the final point of the half to take a one point lead into the break. The half time score was Fr. Caseys 0-03, St. Senans 0-04.

Having matched their intermediate opponents in the opening half, it would be presumed that our junior team would fade as the game progressed but instead Fr. Caseys began the second half in very positive fashion kicking two wonderful early points to regain the lead. With the teams level midway through the half this game was up for grabs but it was St. Senans who delivered a killer punch when they reacted quickest to a crossbar rebound and dispatched the ball to the net. When they extended their advantage to 4 points soon after it looked like the contest was over but Fr. Caseys battled right until the end and made their opponents work hard for victory. In the end Fr. Caseys went down to a 4 point defeat but many positives can be taken from this brave performance. With a month until championship, time is on our side to build further on this showing. The final score was Fr. Caseys 0-08, St. Senans 1-09.
