West Senior Football Championship Preliminary Round
Saint Kieran's 1-11
Castlemahon 1-03
On Saint Patrick's Day our West Championship campaign began against Castlemahon in Knockaderry with Billy Phillips the man in the middle. After two heavy defeats in the opening rounds of the County League we were hopeful of an improved performance. We started brightly with Sean McSweeney being our scorer in chief from play and placed balls. Donie Nolan and Seamus Mangan, who was making his senior debut, added further scores in the opening half to leave the half time score, Saint Kieran's 0-07 Castlemahon 0-01. Our defence was well marshalled by John O'Connor and Brendan McCarthy in this period. Castlemahon, to their credit, rallied in the second half and were rewarded with their hard work midway through the second half when they raised a green flag, leaving just four points separating the teams. We responded well with an increased work rate around the middle third and a greater urgency in our attack. Anthony Molyneaux and Jack Ben Hartnett added points shortly after despite the robust efforts of the Castlemahon defence. Donie Nolan finished to the net after a run from midfield with ten minutes remaining to put some daylight between the teams again and ultimately secure the victory. While it was pleasing to get a win on the day, players and management will be aware that further improvements will have to be made for the tests that lie ahead. Drom/Broadford provide the opposition in the next round of the West Championship, which has yet to be fixed, and after this the countdown will be on for the opening round of the County Championship against Adare.

Co. Intermediate Hurling League Round 1
Saint Kieran's 3-08
Dromin/Athlacca 2-12
There was plenty of drama in Mick Neville Park on Friday evening last as we succumbed to Dromin/Athlacca at the bitter end after the concession of a last gasp goal in a quality game of hurling.  The game was late getting under way with the match being played before it running behind schedule and the appointed réiteoir was also delayed for his duties. Michael Reidy, lining out at half forward, was making his return after taking a break from hurling for a number of years. We got off to a dreadful start as Dromin/Athlacca scored a goal straight from their first attack from the throw in and added a point from the resulting puck out. We were down 1-01 to no score effectively before we even realised we were in a game. We settled after this and began to find our rhythm with Danny Collum goaling shortly after to get us off the mark. Seamus Mangan was also showing well for the ball and was a thorn in the side of the Dromin/Athlacca defence throughout. We led at the short whistle by a solitary score, 1-05 to 1-04. The second half continued to be played at a good pace with both teams going all out for the points. Anthony Molyneaux found the back of the net from a 21 yard free to put us 2 points in the lead entering injury time. We looked like securing the points until the South Limerick outfit raised a green flag from their final attack despite the best efforts of our defence. While it was disappointing not to win the game having taken the lead in injury time, the game should stand to our lads in terms of preparation for the upcoming West and County championships. Glenroe are next up in the County League in two weeks time in Glenroe.
