    U21 Hurling Match Report

This weekend we played Glenroe in the first round of the 13 a side U21 Hurling championship. This was played in Askeaton in bitterly cold conditions but luckily the heavy sleet and hail showers had cleared. Ground conditions were not ideal for hurling but it didn't deter our lads from giving it their all. After a delayed start we found it hard to get to grips with Glenroe and found ourselves 3 points down quickly. After some great work on the right hand side of the field the ball broke to Willie O'Meara who played in Cian O'Connell to score out first point. Declan Guerin and Conor Enright were now starting to get to grips with their mid field and we got the next two points form the stick of Willie O'Meara from two well taken frees. At this stage we had to re-jig our team with the early withdrawal of John Blackwell due to injury, Steven O'Donnell moving into corner back and David Holland replacing him in the half forward line. Glenroe then hit back with 4 points, two from frees before David Holland played in Willie O'Meara for another Askeaton point. Willie was unlucky not to find the net shortly after this with a well struck shot pulling the best from the Glenroe Keeper to keep it out. Then after some quick thinking from Jack Neville he took a quick free into Cian who put it over the bar. Then struck our worst spell of the game just before Half time, Glenroe struck 2-1 in a 4 minute spell. This now seemed like a mountain in front of our lads with the half time score at 2-10 to 5 points.

After a quick turn around our lads showed a brilliant attitude in believing that they shouldn't be in the position that they found themselves, we got the first two scores of the second half from a free taken by Willie and after a great run through the middle of the field Jack Neville took another great score. Glenroe scored the next point which would prove to be the first of only two points they would score in the whole second half. With Andrew, Stephen, Eoin, Damien and Paul completely stopping Glenroe in their tracks they were now giving a great supply of ball through Declan and Conor Enright to our forwards of Conor Barr, Jack, David, Cian and Willie. This lead to a run of scores with three points from Willie, one from a free after Conor Barry was fouled. Then after some great work around the middle of the field Declan played in a super ball over the top for Willie to run onto and he buried it in the back of the net. We were still winning all the battles around the field and when Eoin found himself in a bit of space he picked out Conor Barry for another well taken point. Our last score of the Half was again to come from a free which Willie put over the bar. Glenroe turned in the last sore of the half but the only thing we ran out of on the day to win this one was time, as we completely dominated the second half only to lose out by 4 points 2-12 to 1-11.

We have three more games in our group and if we turn in performances like the second half here we would be a challenge to any team. We wish Harley Moloney a quick recovery for these games,
