Munster Junior Club Final
Glin 2-06
Brosna 0-15
Little did we think at the start of 2014 that we would finish it playing in the Munster Junior final in December. With our primary aim of winning the county title achieved, these last six weeks have been a wonderful experience for all involved and at the end of the day, just a kick of a ball separated ourselves and Brosna in Mallow last Sunday.
Mark Culhane opened the scoring with a well taken point before Brosna kicked five points of their own. However, in the 24th minute, Pádraig Scanlon intercepted a short kickout and set up Mark, who struck the ball sweetly to the back of the net. Philip Moloney and Paddy Fitzgerald kicked two more points before half time to leave the score 0-7 to 1-3 to Brosna.
From the restart, we continued our dominance at midfield, with Edmond Horan, Philip and Paddy winning much ball, being ably assisted by our half back and half forward lines. Mark knocked over another free after Scanlon was fouled, drawing us level. Minutes later, Brian Donovan gave a great pass through the defence to the on-rushing Moloney who buried the ball in the back of the net. It was a brilliant piece of play and on another day could have spurred us on to victory but Brosna hit back with some well worked points which whittled our lead between the 40th and 50th minutes. Mark converted a 45 in response which put both teams level heading into the last ten minutes. Unfortunately we were unlucky to have two black cards awarded against us and Brosna got three unanswered points which gave them the victory.
It has been a fairytale year in many ways for our club. We are very grateful to all our supporters, both at home and abroad, for their messages of support and for coming to all the matches during the year. The players put in a huge effort this year under the guidance of Paddy Madigan, John Anthony Culhane and Liam Long, who deserve great credit for their work with the team. Billy Martin, David Horan and physio Mike O'Shaughnessy also contributed hugely towards our success. We can look forward to playing in the Intermediate County Championship next year and with many local West Limerick rivals playing in the grade, there will be some wonderful clashes to motivate us when we go back training in 2015.
