COMBINED TEAM QUALIFIES FOR

SEMI-FINAL

U21 FOOTBALL PREMIER

CO. CHAMPIONSHIP

Newcastle West/Monagea .......................................3-7

St. Kieran's ..............................................................0-8

County senior football referee Denis Richardson was the man in the middle at Mick Neville Park on Friday, and he received very good co-operation from the players in action, many of whom were/are classmates in post primary.

Conditions, cool, dry, no wind, rain may be threatening but stayed away, were excellent and the contestants could not be faulted for lack of effort. All gave 100%. The game was modern in style, movement of the ball by hand-pass mainly, non stop running off the ball, a huge amount of soloing, a game that's a mix of basketball and rugby and maybe should be called handball. Old timers reared on high fielding and long kicking haven't warmed to it, but the present generation have and enjoy the freedom to move, the constant involvement. This non-stop running, soloing, carrying the ball, hand-passing, yielded 1-3 to us, 0-3 to Kieran's in the first half, but if Kieran's had their shooting boots on they would have been ahead. They kicked some atrocious wides far more than us, 1-1 of our total came from Stephen Brosnan and AJ O'Connor, outstanding for the entire sixty minutes plus kicked 0-2. Kieran's were well in the game at half time. A scoring highlight of the second half was Seán Murphy's goal at 43. The corner back, a minor in 2015, sprinted the length of the Mick Neville all weather to be at the end of a full field movement and boot to the net. This goal came five minutes after a similar effort from Kieran Brouder, the young ones A.J.C, Seán, Kieran showing the way. These goals left us 3-5 to 0-3 ahead at 45 and gave Kieran's a mountain to climb, a task which proved beyond them, though they never dropped the heads and indeed had the satisfaction of getting the final score of the game, a point at 62.

Overall we were the better team, pace, strength, skill and fitness enabling us to create and take the chances that gave us our 4th win in the competition. There were excellent displays all round by the fifteen who started and those who came on as subs. The minors on board i.e. A.J. O'Connor, Seán Murphy and Kieran Brouder were particularly good, often showing the way to older colleagues, but as we said every player starting or coming on gave an excellent account of himself. Well done to all.

Team: Andy Brouder, Seán Murphy 1-0, Kevin Brosnan, Eoin Murphy, Eoin Normoyle, Shane Brosnan, Brian O'Sullivan, Cian Sheehan, Joey Healy captain, Kieran Brouder 1-0, Stephen Brosnan 1-1, A.J. O'Connor 0-3, Shane Stack, Eoin Hurley 0-2, Martin Madden. Subs: Darragh Quilligan, Darragh McMahon, Seán Richards, Ryan Clancy, Conor O'Sullivan, Jack McCarthy, Brian Hurley. Midfielder Gavin Riedy was on the injured list as was James Corbett (better known for his heroics with the Newcastle West junior rugby team) younger brother of intercounty midfielder Iain.

P.S.: neighbours St. Kieran's were gutsy and skilled opponents and gracious losers. They can still qualify. We keep our fingers crossed for them and maybe the two teams will meet in the final. It wouldn't surprise.

Post Primary Schools

Corn Uí Mhuirí Round 2

West Limerick

Schools ......................1-5

Rochestown ..............2-17

The West Limerick Schools team drawn from SMI Coláiste Íde agus Iósaf Abbeyfeale and Coláiste na Trócaire Rathkeale is finding it tough going in the Premier Grade. On Wednesday last at Mallow they were 0-1 to 2-10 behind the Cork school at half time, eventually suffering their second defeat. On the plus side exposure to such a level of football cannot but benefit the players and mentors. Club players in action were Seán Murphy, Seán Ivess, Diarmuid Kelly and Kieran Brouder (Monagea but who plays U21 with Newcastle West/Monagea). The amalgamations 3rd and final game is v St. Fachtna's Skibbereen on Wednesday November 26th.

Post Primary Schools Harty Cup Round 3

West Limerick Schools v Ard Scoil Rís

The two Limerick teams go head to head at Kilmallock today Wednesday with a quarter final place at stake. Seamus Hurley, William Hurley and Brian Hurley are the club players on the starting 15. The amalgamation is drawn from Desmond College, Hazelwood College and Coláiste na Trócaire Rathkeale and is captained by Limerick minor Seamus Flanagan. His battle with fellow Limerick minor Ronan Lynch should be one of the highlights of a game that is exciting with a huge interest. Tipperary man Dinny Cahill, former Tipperary Hurler/Antrim manager, trains the West, and by all accounts has them going well.

Cumann na mBunscol Sarsfield Cup Final

It was the West v City under lights at the Gaelic Grounds on Tuesday evening. Club player Oisín Enright (the Courtenay boys) top scored for the West in the semi-final and Ethan Hurley (Killoughteen) is on the panel also.
