Ian Ryan will miss the early rounds of Limerick's Allianz Football League Division 3 campaign after undergoing ankle surgery this week.

The star forward had been troubled by the injury since April of last year when he went over on it during the Treaty County's Division 4 final victory over Offaly.

"He has to go back after six weeks which is around mid-December and if the healing is good then he can probably start his rehab then, if not it'll be a few more weeks," Limerick amanger John Brudair explained to the Irish Examiner.

Brudair is also hopeful that veteran midfielder John Galvin - who is preparing for Cratloe's Munster club SFC semi-final against The Nire in Dungarvan on Sunday - will be able to soldier on, despite suffering two cruciate knee ligament injuries in recent years.

"I said I'd let him off with Cratloe for the winter and leave him to focus on that. He's in good shape as always and my hope would be that he returns next season."
